Do you ever keep your dc home because of the weather even if the school is open?

Weather is horrible here. It’s cold, it’s wet and it’s sleeting.

My dc (8 and 9 (nearly 10)) walk to school on their own together. It takes 10 mins and is down a straight road with hardly any traffic.

Im keeping them home today because I don’t like the idea of them walking alone in this weather. I can’t take them. I’ve been disabled for the last few months and I haven’t been able to afford a mobility scooter or electric wheelchair, so I’m kinda stuck at home.

It's sleeting loads where I am but the forecast is drier this afternoon, I wouldn't worry about ice in the afternoon anyway, what is the forecast where you are, I wouldn't worry too much about later, it's after dark that is more likely to freeze and they will be coming home just after three

Wowzel · 10/03/2023 08:16

There's no way i would keep mine home in this circumstance.

LadyHarmby · 10/03/2023 08:16

It’s not a good lesson for them to learn - I’m don’t have to bother if something is a little bit harder than usual.

Wrap 'em up and push them out the door 😄It's a 10 min walk, a bit wet and cold. They'll be fine.

snowtrees · 10/03/2023 08:17

That's what coats gloves & hats are for

LesserBohemians · 10/03/2023 08:17

I’d make them go anyway. No, I’ve never kept my ten year old off school because of weather, even when it’s meant him taking a change of clothes and footwear (river between home and school has flooded occasionally).

Overthebow · 10/03/2023 08:18

It’s sleet. You can’t keep them off for sleet.

Are school aware they are walking in alone?

It's pretty normal for junior school kids to walk together if it's local & deemed safe

Emmamoo89 · 10/03/2023 08:19

Ridiculous 🤣

Are school aware they are walking in alone?

Kids around here are encouraged to walk in themselves from middle school.

OP sorry but no way would I not make the kids go to school because of a bit of sleet.

Murraydeservedit · 10/03/2023 08:22

Shit I missed it was just sleet.

I’ve got Narnia outside my window in the west midlands, which is why school is closed today.

I wouldn’t dream of keeping a child off for a bit of sleet.

Mistymoonsinastarrysky · 10/03/2023 08:23

Unless we were completely snowed in my DCs went to school regardless, so long as they’re appropriately dressed they won’t come to any harm. Primary school was 30 minutes walk each way.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 10/03/2023 08:25

I'm currently stood freezing in the playground while DD 8yo gets an arsenal of snowballs ready for when everyone else arrives. She is very excited to play with her friends and to enjoy the snow.

TrashyPanda · 10/03/2023 08:26

its a short walk.

of course they go in.

no reason not to.

Are school aware they are walking in alone?

Yes they are. We have even exchanged emails where they have it written down that I consent to them walking alone.

Sleet is basically just rain, because it doesn't settle like snow and is just wet.

My kids go unless school is closed. My son has a 20 minute walk on his own (he's 11) as he goes to a different school to my girls and we've just got him wrapped up and off he's trotted.

I always hated my colleagues who wouldn't come to work at the sniff of snow, so I don't see why school is any different.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/03/2023 08:29

I once collected mine at half 11 as although town was fine, but congested... the country roads had already been closed by the police. We had to walk over a mile uphill on closed country roads to get to our house (small military base).
The roads were finally cleared at 5pm... the problem had been the congestion had been the gritters couldn't get to hills in time and they had been turned into ice rinks.

gogohmm · 10/03/2023 08:30

No, never, neither did my mother

MissMaple82 · 10/03/2023 08:30

Taxi

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 10/03/2023 08:32

Wellies and waterproofs.

Mariposista · 10/03/2023 08:32

So how are they meant to cope in the future commuting to work in bad weather? Ohhhhh I can’t, it’s too cold and rainy? Ffs, how pathetic.

MissMaple82 · 10/03/2023 08:32

It's full on snow here yet there's still kids walking to school. I think its terrible to keep them off for a bit of sleet! Are you going to keep them off with every dip in the weather, because if you are then I'm guessing you'll end up in serious trouble

Amore2 · 10/03/2023 08:33

Op, I mean this with genuine kindness, but keeping them off is a disproportionate reaction, in my opinion from what you have said here.

i may be projecting here but are you living with anxiety? I feel you as I live with it too now and it’s horrid but if you keep them off, it’s doing them (and you probably too) no favours in the long run. Then, I would consider working on helping your anxious feelings (if you have them).

ladykale · 10/03/2023 08:34

Very ridiculous and teaches kids that school is optional

golddustwomen · 10/03/2023 08:35

If the school is open I would send my kids.
