Car seats and travel sickness?

Fartymcfart · 09/03/2023 19:50

Anyone help me decide on a car seat, I have a tall 19 month old who need a new car seat as he has nearly hit the weight limit on his current one. (He's currently nearly 13kg)

There is so much choice I really don't know how people decide, I would like to keep him rear facing obviously as long as possible.

He also seems to get travel sick when we go in the car in the morning. So it needs to be easily washable to cover this.

Any help much appreciated.

Hmm I presume OP wants to keep her child rear facing as it's now recommended to do so until 4 years old.
My DD was in a joie 360, covers came off easy enough to wash.

I only turned my son round when he was 3.5 as was advised this was safest.

@WindowGazers I wasn't eye rolling at the OP as I agree with her, I was eye rolling at the PP that was insinuating she was stupid to still RF.

Twizbe · 09/03/2023 20:04

I'm afraid I'm with PP.

Sick smell does not come out of cars easily. If forward facing stops them being sick then forward face.

Vintagegoth · 09/03/2023 20:05

My DDs were both hideously car sick. I moved them to forward facing as soon as they were big enough. Totally prepared to be flamed by the extended rear-facing brigade but I was so distracted by the constant crying and screaming and puking and worried about pulling over so they didn't choke on their vomit that I thought it was worth the risk.

FrownedUpon · 09/03/2023 20:06

If he’s car sick, forward face him.

R0ckets · 09/03/2023 20:08

We have a joie 360 spin which is fantastic and the covers do come off quit easily although it's a pain putting them back in but that's the same with any car seat.

I'm afraid forward facing was the only thing to work for travel sickness for us too though so definitely worth considering.

Absolutely this. Forward facing was an instant cure for mine too. It’s great if your child is happy to stay rear facing but if they’re miserable, puking and at risk of choking and they’re over 15 months old then I would give up on RF and buy the safest forward facing seat you can.

Kentlassie · 09/03/2023 20:30

We have joie 360s and my nearly 3 year old still pukes (and is forward facing). Covers are easy enough to wash though.

Everyone who knows about child car safety. The NHS, for one.

Don’t give car seat advice if you don’t know about car seats. Spin seats generally can’t be installed in the middle.

mummyh2016 · 09/03/2023 21:05

@WindowGazers ahh sorry! Thank you!

Fartymcfart · 10/03/2023 19:57

Thanks everyone, I do want to try and keep them rear facing if possible as he is only ever sick in the morning and I don't drive that often (currently driving at moment due to my eldest having a broken leg) as that is what is recommended.

I will try forward facing if it is still an issue, so maybe a spin seat might be best

I’m going against the grain, I would avoid the joie 360, although it goes upto 4 years if your son is like mine and tall 95th percentile he was out of it before he was 3 due to the height.

I would look at extended rear facing options, cheaper variants are Britax twe but most would recommend axkid, you will need it go upto 6 not 4 for the height issue.

itsgood2talk · 10/03/2023 23:28

We have the axkid mini kid which is rear facing to 25kg. Really good seat and my son is very comfortable in it.

WhoHidTheCoffee · 10/03/2023 23:39

We have the Axkid Move, which is cheaper than the Minikid and doesn’t have all the features but is also ERF to 25kg.

Fartymcfart · 12/03/2023 10:59

Thank you, I'll take a look at those seats
