Skipton schools

We are looking at potentially moving here and are aware that in catchment the options are the two selective schools plus Skipton Academy.

My question is about Upper Wharfedale school. Does anybody know the likelihood of getting a place there if living in Skipton itself?

It’s unlikely.

Depends if it’s central Skipton you’re looking at though. Embsay children sometimes get in depending on numbers, but kids in Skipton rarely get a place (apart from those with siblings already there)

Thanks @Flora56. That's interesting! I note that they only fill approx half of their places from inside their catchment. I wonder where the other half tend to come from?

A few friends of mine who live in the Raikeswood/Rockwood area have managed to get their children in, but it's heavily oversubscribed and far from certain. If you're not tied to moving to Skipton itself then South Craven is a popular school locally which might be worth considering? You'd definitely need to be in catchment to get in there, but catchment is only a few minutes out of Skipton, with some nice villages in it.

As @agoodfriendofthethree says, South Craven is a good school. If you wanted to hedge your bets with South Craven and Ermysted’s/SGHS, moving to the Kildwick/Cross Hills/Glusburn/Steeton area would be a good shout. You’re in the South Craven catchment area there, and whilst out of the Ermysted’s/SGHS catchment, if your DC passed the 11+ you’re still very likely to get a place. We live in Steeton and my DS was offered a place at Ermysted’s.

50% sounds lots but considering their PAN is 70, it’s actually only 35 children.

You then have EHCPs, staff children and children living in the villages closer to the boundary line.

It’s not impossible - if you’re buying where the pp mentioned you have a better chance.

Having said all that, Skipton Academy just announced their good ofsted.

@YorkshireLawyer we must be neighbours! We live in exactly the area you described so we could hedge our bets with South Craven/the Skipton grammar schools. Our two both got into SGHS/Ermysted's comfortably on distance but it was comforting knowing they'd definitely get in at South Craven if they hadn't passed the 11+. I definitely think it's a great place to live in terms of school options!

The academy has just received a good Ofsted rating and is oversubscribed for this year 7 intake in September. It's doing really well.

This is exactly where we are looking actually!
