How to get rid of this smell !?

Does anyone on here know to how get rid of smells!
I've just bought a pair of leather boots from Ebay.
They've come and they really smell of cigarettes and just a general unpleasant smell 🤢 ( think the great unwashed kind of smell!)
Trouble is they are a lovely pair of boots themselves, Russell and Bromley no less!!
Is there any way of getting rid of the smell or should I just stick them in the bin

Yuk
Think of the bacteria 🤢

Any of these

Baking soda
Leather cleaner
Airing them
Charcoal
Rubbing alcohol
Vinegar

Have a look online there will be lots of options

Also a sock filled with cat litter and tied at the top - shove into boot. Leave boots outside to air, but in a dry, safe place. Eg garage, shed, porch.

Spray them with something like Febreeze or a good foot deodorant and leave them outside to air in a porch or shed if you have such spaces. If not then allocate them a special space indoors.

I'm used to coming back from my mother's house smelling like a used ash tray because she was until recently a dyed in the wool very heavy smoker. The smell does fade eventually though you can need to wash and spray things to speed it up.

unscented cat litter put them in a big bag and seal leave for a few days.

Add bicarbonate into boots for good measure.

Activated charcoal. You can buy bags of it on eBay from fish tank suppliers. Make little pouches of it using coffee filters. Put the pouches into the boots. Lots of them. Fill the boots up. Put the boots in a big ziplock bag. Throw in loads more pouches of charcoal. Put the bag away somewhere and forget about it for a few weeks. Works for mildew as well.

I wonder if biological washing powder sprinkled in and then vacuumed out a day later would do it? The enzymes are meant to kill biological smells rather than masking so might be worth a try.

Vinegar and alcohol can damage leather so be cautious with those.

PeacheyPeach · 09/03/2023 18:00

Thanks everyone. I had put a load of bicarbonate on them and put them in a bag yesterday when they arrived in the post , but they still smell so i will give them a bit longer x
That's mental about the cat litter! Will give that a try aswell!

Good idea ( they were fab at de stinking dog /fox smells in the car). and on offer £1 at the range.

I had a leather jacket that smelt bad and this worked…
scrunch up newspaper into balls and stuff the boots with them. Put them in a bin liner and surround with scrunched up newspaper. Leave in a dark cupboard for as long as possible, check after a week or two, although I forgot about mine and it was left for months! Smell totally gone.
I did the same for a leather bag I bought from the charity shop which stank of cigarettes (only noticed when I got home) and worked brilliantly

Oh god the idea of a Great Dane with haemorrhaging diarrhoea 😫. I’ve never heard of that per se but get the idea ….

Bicarbonate of soda removed shoe odour

CrotchetyQuaver · 09/03/2023 20:32

I'd leave them in the fresh air (as much as you're able to bearing in mind current weather conditions) and that should make a lot of difference.
