Balls'd up scarf knitting. 2nd wool is different!

Just switched to second ball, only it's not the same wool at all, just similar colours, aaargh! Confused

I have 1 metre of the original & added a foot of the new stuff. How crap does it look?

Can I get away with it? Could I add 50 cm of the new stuff at each end to balance it? How do I even add stitches to the beginning where I started?

It was going to be a birthday present for this weekend Blush

I don’t think it’s noticeable- it’s going to be a lovely present.

Maybe get a ball of the first stuff and add that to the end so it’s the middle but that’s different.

Aaaw, thank you Target. I'm still a novice, so I was quite proud of it until ball 2 Grin

Doesn’t look crap at all to me. I can’t see the join on a quick glance and it will be even less noticeable wound round a neck.
If you want to add some at the other end what I would do is a row or two from the end stick your needle through the right hand leg of each stitch then unravel from the end to the stitches you have picked up.

That would definitely be the most sensible & balanced wouldn't it? I'm out of time now & as the wool was inherited-without labels- I wouldn't have a clue where to get it.

Next time. Double check!

I think it looks fine, I'd wear it! I love a good multicoloured scarf!

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel Thank you!!! Smile

I'm rereading your advice, but my brain is really struggling to understand exactly what you mean. Sorry it's me not you. I've been really poorly recently.

Any pre-school level written instructions or video you could recommend?

Gosh, I wouldn't notice that at all! I'm a knitter too and it would annoy the hell out of me if I did it myself, but honestly, that scarf looks lovely and I'm sure the recipient will be delighted.

I think it looks fab! 😁 well done! And lucky recipient- I would love if someone went to the effort of making a scarf for me.

The last picture Here shows it. They call it ‘picking up stitches before frogging.’
They have shown it a few rows before the working end but as you can knit from either direction you can also do it from the cast on end.

Though tbh since the consensus is it looks fine I probably wouldn’t bother this time.

WhatInFreshHell · 09/03/2023 14:51

It looks lovely!
For future reference, a ball of wool will always have a dye lot number on the ball band. If you choose two or however many balls with the same dye lot number, they'll have been manufactured with the same dying process and colours etc.

Curlygirl06 · 09/03/2023 15:43

I'm a knitter and I can't see anything wrong with it. If you don' tell them, they probably won't know. Perhaps either end, make a fringe with the second ball of wool, tie the colours in that way? It looks lovely and you should be proud of yourself, well done.

StitchyMcStitchFace · 09/03/2023 15:46

Thank you everyone, you've all made me feel much better about it. Maybe it's not a 'faulty gift' after all Grin

Massive thanks @TheCountessofFitzdotterel Star Never heard of picking up stitches before frogging, or tinking Grin

If I can understand how to do it, I'll have a go, otherwise it'll have to stay as two scarves joined together, he he.

Thank you @WhatInFreshHell Great advice Smile
