If you wore a non-traditional wedding dress did you regret it?

I'm getting married next month and still haven't got a dress. I've seen one I like - it's blue silk- but I'm not sure if I should go for something more traditional. We're having a small registry office wedding and both in our 40's if that makes a difference!

I got married in blue sequined dress from phase 8. It was beautiful.

Melroses · 08/03/2023 16:51

Oh wow! 😍

HumanBurrito · 08/03/2023 16:58

Absolutely not. Was never the traditional dress type. Slightly wish I had tried a few on for the experience though.

Beautiful OP.

TinaWeymouthsBass · 08/03/2023 17:05

That's stunning op, I'm well jealous!

MoiraRoseRules · 08/03/2023 17:09

That’s beautiful, stunning & totally smart!

I wore a sea green silk dress which was a 50’s inspired wedding dress but I went for a colour rather than white / ivory because I couldn’t imagine wearing a traditional dress. At that stage I’d not been to any weddings really.

I occasionally regretted not feeling I could do what everyone else does without a care, but I mainly have felt happy that my choice was always very ‘me’. Our wedding still gets comments because we did it a bit alternatively, and people loved it.

The husband was also a good choice 👍🏻

😍 gorgeous!

verdantverdure · 08/03/2023 17:11

I wore a summer dress and a flower crown at the registry office and we had a big outdoor party afterwards.

No regrets. It was a fantastic day, the weather was glorious. I looked amazing, and it cost a tenth of a traditional white wedding.

Artemi · 08/03/2023 17:13

Beautiful dress OP! Definitely go for that!

Womblemumma · 08/03/2023 17:13

Blue silk sounds perfect!

WhineWhineWINE · 08/03/2023 17:15

I looked like a meringue in mine (early 90's also big hair 😆 )
Blue silk sounds gorgeous.

For my second wedding, in my 40’s and with 2 children, I wore a scarlet wedding dress with a long train, lace, and a few sequins. It was made to measure in China and cost a tiny fraction of already made wedding dresses in local shops.
I loved it. People kept telling me that red was a lucky colour and I suited red.
As I had nowhere to store it and wanted someone else to benefit I re sold it later for about half of the original sum.

Needmorelego · 08/03/2023 17:18

I wore a "nice" summer dress from Debenhams. I didn't really like it or feel comfortable in it - I would have preferred to be in jeans and a nice top'.

emptythelitterbox · 08/03/2023 17:23

Wore a beautiful lilac and sequin ellie Saab gown.

No regrets. 1st marriage wore a black and white chanel suit.

If I'd gone with a traditional wedding gown it would look hilariously dated. mutton sleeves

Do it. Do what you want. It's your wedding. I got married in a bottle green velvet medieval-style number. I loved it then and I love it now.

Lol, I too married in a medievalesque green chiffon number and a bodice with gold boning. It was made for
me by the Manager of the Kings Head in Upper Street Islington as he had a sideline in dressmaking. It cost me £300 twenty four years ago. Married on May 1st so had Hawthorne in my hair 😁.

IAmDoingIt · 08/03/2023 17:24

Not only was it non-traditional, but it was a dress I’d bought for my SIL’s wedding the previous year! I loved it, it had been a lot of money for me at the time and I had been to try it on in the shop so many times because I loved it so much but struggled to justify spending the money. I was very happy to wear it again and felt great in it on the day. I think I bought some slightly more bridal accessories to go with it so it wasn’t exactly the same outfit.

I love the dress I wore.

my DH who fully signed off on the non-traditional dress and even helped me pick it out, still occasionally shows me pictures of fluffy white wedding dresses that he thinks would look good on me nearly 20 years later.

He truly believes in having an egalitarian marriage where I am free to make my own choices and I love him for that. The reality though is that I didn’t care about the dress that much. Had I realized it mattered to him, I have no doubt I could have found something I loved that was fluffy and white. I wish I had done that for him. It would have been such a tiny, meaningless thing for me personally.

Renew your vows and wear a beautiful white fluffy dress.

Igniteyourbones · 08/03/2023 17:31

I wore a traditional dress, as I thought it was expected of me. If I could go back in time I would chose something that was more “me”. Pick whatever you love and don’t worry what anyone else will think.

SlipperyLizard · 08/03/2023 17:35

I wore a bright pink dress that was meant to be a bridesmaid dress (I think, although it was nice unlike many BM dresses!). No regrets, I felt and looked my best, would 100% do it again.

2bazookas · 08/03/2023 17:44

It was the 60's. I wore a shocking pink mini dress. DH wore a floral shirt and a long flowing silky scarf instead of a tie. We were the bees knees.

abyssofwoah · 08/03/2023 17:52

I went for traditional and I regret it now

Triflenot · 08/03/2023 17:54

That’s lovely OP

Always4Brenner · 08/03/2023 18:02

Hated my first wedding peach suit not given much choice hated the flowers everything. 2nd wedding choose a traditional dress and loved it and a big bouquet too everything my first wedding wasn’t.

riotlady · 08/03/2023 18:02

I wore a peach-y evening dress from Needle and Thread and loved it. Bonus: it was so much comfier than the traditional dresses I tried on!
