Vaping caused collapsed lung?

wossgoinon · 08/03/2023 06:45

My 18 yr son is currently on a drain in hospital due to a collapsed lung awaiting surgery.

I to pick up clothes for him as he will be in hospital for at least 2 weeks and I found vapes in his drawers.

Is there evidence to suggest that vaping may have caused this?

he is young, fit and well otherwise and this is a complete shock

I know a young man this happened to. He had part of his lung removed. Inhaling hot oily substances can't be good for your lungs. He was advised that vaping was the probable cause.

Starflecked · 08/03/2023 06:48

It can happen 'spontaneously' and vaping wouldn't have helped even if it wasn't the cause. It seems research hasn't yet found a definite link but suspects there is.

Either way I'm sure it'll put him off vaping.

MegCleary · 08/03/2023 06:49

I don’t know about the vaping but is he quite tall and slim? Young men of that build can have spontaneous lung collapse.

Singleandproud · 08/03/2023 06:49

Vaping is too new to know all of the side affects but has been linked to young patients with popcorn lung and other respiratory issues so if he has no other history of respiratory illness it may have done. I would certainly bring the fact he vapes to the attention of the medical staff treating him.

RampantIvy · 08/03/2023 06:51

I have no idea, but I hope he makes a speedy recovery Flowers

This. But the vaping may well not have helped. Take a doctor to the side and ask if that’s something they associate with it?

rosegoldivy · 08/03/2023 06:52

Happened to my DH, but not through vaping.
Spontaneous pneumothorax.
Said it was due to him being a tall skinny male.
It happened the first time then again a year later, he had surgery and has made a full recovery and has had no issues 4 years down the line.
(Have also fattened him up)
Happy to answer any questions
Hope your son is ok

Sadly vapes are now considered to be extremely damaging to health and many young people are addicted to them. This will be the next health scandal

Lungs are designed to inhale cool, clean air, not hot air full of smoke and other chemicals. There will be no proven link between vaping and the long term effects, as the trend is realistically new, but common sense tells you that it can't be good for the lungs!

The sooner they're banned the better.

JussathoB · 08/03/2023 08:30

Discuss the reasons for his illness with the doctors.
Also ask specifically whether the doctors think your DS should carry on vaping ( pretty sure the answer will be no, regardless of whether the gaping is directly responsible for this pneumothorax or not)

SnowLemons · 08/03/2023 08:33

Hope he's better soon.

Speak to the doctors about the vaping.

MoonriseKingdom · 08/03/2023 08:40

Spontaneous happen sometimes in young men (usually tall and skinny) so may well not be related.
However, I do worry about the huge numbers of young people vaping on a regular basis and seeing this as safe. Preferably to cigarettes but I worry this will catch up with us in the next couple of decades. There is also an environmental cost to large numbers of disposable vapes being thrown away. I think we may regret how unregulated this market has been.

carriedout · 08/03/2023 08:42

Vapes are really bad for lung health and doctors/lung specialists are extremely worried. The fact they have been allowed to be sold with so little restriction is a disgrace.

As a replacement for cigarettes they may be a useful medical tool, as a replacement for fresh air they are a scandal.

TheArtfulScreamer1 · 08/03/2023 08:44

No medical expert so don't know if it's linked but I really do think that Vapes are the next health crisis. In another 20 years or so I think we're going to see a generation with breathing and lung issues because of vaping.

IndiganDop · 08/03/2023 08:47

I have a friend who works at post grad level at P and G in pharmaceuticals. Her opinion is that inhaling superheated oil into your lungs is going to turn out to not be a great idea....

Seriously??

My youngest Son is tall and thin/slim.

Bit worried now .

It's a really low risk, something like 0.7%

ButterCrackers · 08/03/2023 08:57

Vaping causes lung damage. He will have to stop for good now.

Iam4eels · 08/03/2023 08:59

I agree that vaping is going to be the next big health issue and I also think it'll emerge that manufacturers knew all along just like they did with smoking. I know so many people who have never, ever smoked but have taken up vaping. I hate that a lot of venues allow vaping indoors because I don't want to be breathing that shit in and I hate that it looks and smells attractive to kids with funky coloured bars and oils that smell like sweets (and don't get me started on the litter those disposable ones cause, absolutely awful for the environment).

I hope your son makes a full recovery OP and that he manages to stay off the vapes.

Prolonged inhalation or aspiration of oil will kill you, check out Lipoid pneumonia. Tpd approved e-liquids do not contain oil.

LangClegsInSpace · 08/03/2023 09:14

Is there evidence to suggest that vaping may have caused this?

No, there's not. PHE have spent years closely following all the science around vaping. Here is their latest evidence update:

www.gov.uk/government/publications/nicotine-vaping-in-england-2022-evidence-update

E-liquid does not contain oil.

Far from being unregulated, the TPD requires extensive testing of e-liquids and approval of all ingredients before it can be sold.

Hope your son makes a swift recovery.

You need to add more info here, - presumably you have not fully expressed what you mean as 0.7% is nearly 1 in 100.

What, specifically are you claiming is the risk of a young man having spontaneous lung collapse?

Favouritefruits · 08/03/2023 09:54

They said vaping is really harmful to pets, so it must be bad for humans too.I’ve read lots about vaping and I really don’t see why people do it. An 18 year old in the USA died because the nicotine in a vape is the equivalent to 18cigarettes which makes it more addictive and his lungs collapsed.
