We give iron tablets to ferritin below 30 (Anp in go surgery)

Bluetitnest · 07/03/2023 19:03

So I’d get them in your surgery then ?

NHS cut off for deficiency is 30, although as others have said, levels need to be a lot higher to promote hair growth etc.

Yes, I'd give you 3 month's treatment. That's the guidance for the whole trust not just our surgery. Thought it would be pretty standard.

Fipfop · 07/03/2023 19:50

My ferritin is 12 and feel rough with it. You can buy ferrous sulphate over the counter, don't need a prescription. I've been told to take 1 a day

ArmchairAnarchist2 · 07/03/2023 20:40

Take the tablets with orange juice.

Bluetitnest · 08/03/2023 08:11

Isn’t it odd then that the test results say normal no further action needed

as the test results say above 13 is normal ?

That’s the thing I’ve been taking ferrous fumarate for two months
And two months ago my iron level was 12 so only risen. By 2 in 2 months
Well it was 3 months but I only really took the iron for about 2 months

What is anp?

My ferritin is always been around 30 when I’ve got really tired and gone to my doctor to moan about it. We aren’t in the UK and she recommends that women stay over 50 to feel well and reduce chances of hair loss.

Start supplementing with iron. If it’s affordable look for a private transfusion.

Noicant · 08/03/2023 08:20

I take mine with 1000mg vitamin c just to make damn sure it’s being absorbed.

user1471505356 · 08/03/2023 08:20

Over the counter iron tablets are low dose, prescription iron will be 100-300mg.

Strawberrypicnic · 08/03/2023 08:21

My ferritin hovered around 6-7 for a long time, don't underestimate how rubbish it can make you feel! I was getting up feeling like I had been hit by a bus and struggling to make it through the day. As others here have said it should ideally be well into the average range, not just at the margin. Floradix helps me without causing any stomach trouble, just chase it with a bit of orange juice as it's not the best taste. I wish I hadn't spent years trying and giving up with horrible iron tablets.

Not if you get the pharmacy ones. They’re the same as the ones you get prescribed but cheaper.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/03/2023 10:03

I can't help but wonder why mine is so high!! I wonder if it's because I was on mirena from 36 and now 61 - so never had periods after 36! GP seems baffled-

Bluetitnest · 08/03/2023 10:50

That’s the problem I’ve already been supplementing with iron
taking ferrous fumarate from the pharmacy which the drs previously prescribed as few months ago my iron level was only 12 so just below the threshold
so prescribed iron then
but cheaper to buy anyway

but it’s taken 2/3 months to get it to rise from 12 to 14
taken at least 84 ferrous fumarate
in that time

My levels were as low as 5 at one point, Hb was initially 104. Palpitations, massive hair thining and breakage, felt like walking through treacle when taking the dog out, cold hands and tingling and weird anxiety. Much improved now, last result was 40 and hair has definitely grown and thickened. Mine was certainly heavy period related, now I'm menopausal (2 years since last one) things have stabilised !

TiredArse · 08/03/2023 15:15

Bluetitnest · 07/03/2023 13:30

Mine seems to be caused by heavy periods

Have they suggested anything to help with them? You’re going to struggle to get your iron up if the root cause isn’t addressed.

Take a look at this recent article, I'm going through exactly the same

www.rcpjournals.org/content/clinmedicine/21/2/107

If you aren't responding to oral supplements then you should be offered the IV infusion

Dodgeitornot · 08/03/2023 15:22

My daughter's was this level and she was prescribed iron, so I'm assuming that yes, most definitely.

Dodgeitornot · 08/03/2023 15:23

Actually hers was 25 when she was prescribed iron. We were told she's the lower end of normal and given how tired she is they want her on iron for 3 months.

Bluetitnest · 09/03/2023 16:40

Thanks for the link yarnball
This is what’s frustrating that I’ve already been taking. The iron
and it’s only gone up slightly

my go just says your not anaemic anymore !!
