Knotted hair

I have really neglected myself lately, to the point I can’t get a hair brush through my hair.
usually I just throw my hair in a bun and don’t think about it but it’s getting really bad.
Just cut a massive chunk of my hair off because I don’t think any amount of conditioner would have helped it. My hair is so dry and neglected and I feel so bad I have let it get to this point.
what can I do? Is there a way I can help my hair or will I just have to cut the knotted part off?
I’m phoning a hairdresser soon and getting a bob haircut as I really can’t manage longer hair

A load of conditioner and a tangle teezer and work slowly through it, a little at a time

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 06/03/2023 22:22

For tonight get it just a little damp, load it with conditioner, wrap it in cling film/shower cap whatever you've got that you can wrap it in to stop conditioner getting everywhere and go to bed. In the morning give it a really good wash. Then using a wide toothed comb start at the bottom and work the tangles out bit by bit.

I have spent over an hour brushing out matts for a client, i didnt mind doing it. Hairdressers are willing to help do it if you need it. They also have stronger detangler and it is always easier for someone else to do it than it is yourself. They could also put a deep conditioning treatment on your hair which would help the condition. If you go to a college, it would be cheaper too.

A bob is a good idea if you can't manage, but don't be afraid to ask for help.

Lots of conditioner and work from the bottom up. Hope things improve for you

vipersnest1 · 06/03/2023 23:01

Work from the ends up! Otherwise all you will do is compact the knots that are already there. It might take some time, and then consider going for a haircut to help you to feel like your hair is manageable. Good luck Flowers.

My friend has helped me with my hair twice coz its all been completely matted . She's said I wouldn't be able to do it myself. She's had to cut thru chunks of knots that I wouldn't be able to see myself then She's just combed and combed thru.
My hair is also very dry and wirey.

You will need to ask someone to help you for sure and you will probably need to cut through knots so as long as you're not someone who is particularly hair proud you should handle it OK. I'm always of the opinion it grows again !!!!

You need really good conditioner. Not a conditioners are created equal! Look at the Shea moisture range, they do pots of hair mask. Slap that on for an hour and then start combing starting with the ends, not the roots.

JamBiscuitBun · 07/03/2023 00:38

Tangle teeze, they're magic. Start at the ends & go gently.

UB40andaglassofwine · 07/03/2023 01:56

As a pp said... work from the ends in small sections up. It may take a while but should definitely work

Sorry for the horrible link above, but that detangler brush saved me!!

I've tried others in the past & this is the only one that works for me.

my hair is long (can sit in it) and very fine. When I came out of hospital, I seriously thought I was going to have to have it all shaved off.

i tried all the conditioners/wide toothed combs etc etc, but THIS is what saved me.

tesco used to sell them, but they don't anymore, so I recently bought a couple from an online health & beauty retailer. But when I googled, that link came up.

Honestly, THE thickest tangles and no cutting required!!

WinterMusings · 07/03/2023 02:13

It HAS to be the pink brush with the yellow bristles.

I've tried others in the past with no luck!

TomeTome · 07/03/2023 02:18

Tangle teaser, tons of conditioner and no shame. Everyone gets in a muddle sometimes. Go slowly and start at the tips. Take breaks but keep going. It’s going to be fine and is solvable. 🤗

If it makes you feel any better I didn't brush my hair for a year and a half when I was really depressed.

Mine was beyond saving however I found the mane 'n' tail detangler really helpful for the bits that weren't so bad.

I had to cut all mine off as it was large dreadlocks made up of lots of tiny ones with lots of products and fluff added into the mix 😬. It was awful but I'm sure yours is nowhere near that stage.

Start from the bottom and don't be afraid to cut bits off if need be. I know it's shit but it's only hair ❤️

Thank you everyone
I brought a new hairbrush that helps with tangled hair, going to give it a good wash and book a hair appointment tomorrow x

Aussie hair conditioner is good for detangling. I once needed a whole bottle to get the tangles out. (in hospital and the up do stayed up!)
