Stanley Johnson’s knighthood

PopGoesTheProsecco · 06/03/2023 22:11

Anyone else slightly shocked that a man could put his father forward for a knighthood knowing (according to numerous news outlets) that he broke his mum’s nose leaving her having to go to
hospital?

What does shock me is the honours system that allows him to nominate his own father for a knighthood. How on earth is that allowed?

He gave his brother, the one who refused to back him, a peerage. HE didn't turn it down. He's done nothing to merit it, either.

I missed that somehow.

The system is fucked. There ought to be a proper process based on merit and contribution alone, not disgraced PMs nominating friends and family.

Thought he'd applied to bé naturalised as a French citizen? He's anti-Brexit and lives in France from what I can remember.

Crocalock · 07/03/2023 08:53

Boris has spent his entire life trying to win his father’s affection and approval. Unfortunately for Boris, nothing will work.

Bad enough that Johnson Snr is frequently wheeled out to comment on national issues in the media. But this.... jeez. I hadn't even been aware of the domestic abuse allegations. Even without them he's unfit for a title. But with them. again. Jeez

YogaLite · 07/03/2023 09:26

Sunak can't win.
If he opposes it, BoJo will roll out even bigger guns.
If he doesn't, he will prove how weak he is and it will increase Labour's popularity.

But what makes my blood boil is how BoJo is running rings around them all, the government and the royals, why do we need royals if they don't stand for integrity?

He beat her for years, in front of their children, broke her nose, ruined her mental health and she had a complete breakdown and had to be hospitalised. He cheated on her repeatedly. He’s sexually assaulted other women.

But then Boris denies the existence of some of his children, coerced the mothers of others to get abortions, cheated on all his wives and partners, lied to the queen and the country and tried to get a journalist beaten up.

If they were on a shit soap you wouldn’t believe it.

Utter shameless bastards.

This! Well said!

Can't say I am surprised

I agree with this. As the eldest child he witnessed the worst of his father's behaviour towards his mother.

I know one of his younger brothers and he is very different to Boris and Rachel. Very charming but very family focussed and private.

To be fair it's not unusual for retired government ministers who've kept their noses clean to be given a place in the Lords as working government peers. That's why there wasn't a protest when Johnson Minor got a peerage in 2020.

I seem to remember him bragging about slapping his wife, in some television interview.

Yes, I know about that, but it's the sheer chutzpah of him giving it to his brother. There was a lot of critical coverage about it, but the committee simply pushed it through. It's disgraceful, in my opinion.

QuietlyConfident · 07/03/2023 12:29

Nobody's mentioned the multiple allegations of groping either. Including allegations by a Tory MP - to which his defence was "I can't remember her" rather than, say "no I definitely didn't do that because I wouldn't ever grope a random woman I met at a party conference without her consent"

Hairypaw · 07/03/2023 13:06

For people saying what has he ever done - loads for the environment in the face of EU/European opposition. He won a Greenpeace award for outstanding services to the Environment, WWF award and numerous others.

To quote The Guardian
"The EU Habitats directive is the great and lasting endeavour of the environmentalist Stanley Johnson, who, in the late 1970s, was a senior Eurocrat in the environmental division of the European Commission in Brussels, working as senior adviser to DG Environment and as director of energy policy. As Johnson Senior tells it in his memoirs, he had been an elected MEP, but when that finished he went back to being a civil servant; and because no one gave him work to do in the commission, he just dashed off the Habitats directive.
In fact, he was an heroic defender of the environment. Together with that other Stanley (Clinton Davis), who was EU environment commissioner at the time, he conceived, drafted, battled for and then shepherded through the legislation, in the face of fierce opposition by European industry."

SinnerBoy · 07/03/2023 14:54

Oh great, so he's not simply a wife beating s*x pest. That's me sold, he thoroughly deserves a knighthood.

LlynTegid · 07/03/2023 15:31

I wonder if it is a ruse, so that it will be declined, and some other undeserving person will get an honour without anyone really complaining. A Tory donor, or someone who will do favours for Boris Johnson?

Either way, it should never be considered. Saying that because of the habitats directive is merit is akin to saying that Mussolini should be venerated because he got trains to run on time.

Sporty2022 · 10/03/2023 18:56

Well Boris’ brother Jo Johnson is now in the House of Lords, so Boris may aswell make his dad a Sir too.

Its shocking that we still have an honours system for privileged people like this.

But it’s the old boys network isn’t it? If Boris can get his family on the gravy train he will.

PopGoesTheProsecco · 10/03/2023 23:09

But - as Fiona Bruce (Refuge Ambassador) was so quick to point out on last night’s Question Time - he only broke her nose once.

So that’s okay then.

Arise Sir Stanley! 🤦‍♀️

Why the fuck are Rishi and the Conservative Party not distancing themselves completely from Boris Johnson? And his wife abusing relatives. Johnson corruption and lying are really the last thing they should indulge when the country is already in a complete economic mess. I don’t get why Liz Truss will never be seen again yet Johnson failed as a PM yet still has political power.
