I have no clue how to work this out... can any one help

6 squared (36) plus 7 squared (49) plus 8 squared (64)

?

or am I missing something?

ZombiePara · 06/03/2023 15:35

So Square the numbers, and as them together

6 squared is 6x6
7 squared is 7x7
8 squared is 8x8
Do them as individual answers, then add them all up! :)

ZombiePara · 06/03/2023 15:35

*add

TeenDivided · 06/03/2023 15:36

6 squared is 36, 7 squared is 49, 8 squared is 64
Added this makes 149

Strange question.

avocadotofu · 06/03/2023 15:36

Do they mean the square root e.g. 6 squared: 6x6=36?

dinnerlunch · 06/03/2023 15:36

Oh Yes that all
Makes sense- I had a total mind blank there!!! Thank you all so much

@TeenDivided

you could have just scrolled on past. The OP was asking for help, not bitchiness.

nothing 'strange' about not knowing how to do something.

@WinterMusings You misunderstood / I wasn't clear.

I was referring to the homework question being strange, not the OP not knowing / forgetting how to do it. I've been around MN long enough to know that many people find maths very hard, as does my own DD.

@TeenDivided

oh I see, sorry no, that wasn't clear.

Why do you think the homework question is 'strange' ? It seems pretty 'ordinary' to me for Y6.

That's not the square root. Square root is the opposite of squaring a number

TeenDivided · 07/03/2023 07:13

@WinterMusings I suppose I think it is a bit strange as it seems a pointless thing to do.
If it was worded as square patches of grass, or add two squares then square root the answer (e.g. 6&8, or 5&12 for extension) then there would seem more 'point'. But as you say, it is only y5/6 so I guess it is just doing basic skills.

Just testing the pupil knows how to square numbers and do adding.

If it was on My Maths or Heggerty, they would just have to similar about 20 times.

Which some pupils would love and others would find a bit boring or tedious.

Yeah, DC is only 10 & it should be reinforcing what they have been taught, so the child should have known what to do, but the clearly didn't and at most I'd only ask them what squared means... otherwise the teacher thinks they solid with that & they're not. They move on with some kids not ready to. Then they don't get more complicated questions like how much carpet for this house?
