Weimaraners, Vizslas, Pointers and GSPs

Just saw a Vizsla this morning and I began to wonder how this and similar-looking breeds are for grooming. They generally appear to have smooth, short, close coats which strike me as low maintenance. Having said that, I used to think the same about Labradors but I now know they can moult at championship level!

Feel free to post pictures of your pooches with your answers! Thankyou.

I have a German Wirehaired Pointer and the coat is very low maintenance. No cutting or trimming ever needed, just the occasional brush - but fairly frequent showers, after he's wallowed about in mud!

Handsnotwands · 06/03/2023 11:54

our pointer's hairs were quite thick so slightly needle like properties but on the whole easy to care for. recall and amount of exercise required however........

We've had 2 Weimaraners, both required very little grooming, a rubber zoom brush helped with removing dead undercoat and they had regular baths. Wonderful dogs, but not for the novice or faint hearted.
We have miniature Schnauzers now...

Not all GWPs are created equal, I'd say, you can have slick coats, woolly wiry coats, and coarser wiry coats. I have a German Wirehaired Pointer who is quite woolly and he is high maintenance in that he needs hand stripping several times a year, at a cost of around £70 a time. He doesn't moult routinely, but when he does it's big clumps of fur. His undercoat also sucks up puddle water and then sheds a fine silty dust all over the place once he's dry, which is rather frustrating. He's constantly got bits of leaves and stuff attached to his fluffy bits that he then brings into the house. He might not shed a lot but the general detritus he brings into the house (and his constant whiff due to aforementioned puddle absorption, despite regular baths) is plenty to contend with.

My German Short-haired Pointer is a much cleaner dog, she seems to almost repel dirt, unlike the GWP, but she moults constantly in huge amounts. The hairs are short, unlike Labradors, but I think if anything it just makes them harder to pick up or remove from clothing. The force of her personality is roughly equivalent to owning 5 Labradors.

I love both my dogs but I would not describe them as low maintenance in any way, shape, or form. 🤣

I dog sat a vizslar earlier this year. I didn't notice any molting. He had like a little ginger beard style around his mouth. Such a big dog - very strong (and loud when barking!) but super sociable and a real personality.

toastfiend · 06/03/2023 12:08

Oh, if you have a dog with a beard like my GWP you also need to be prepared for constant water puddles everywhere and for them to dry their faces on you/your furniture after every drink.

Batfurger · 06/03/2023 12:09

Have 2 weims. Bath once a month or so & rubber brush when I get found to it. Low maintenance

Sheitgeist · 06/03/2023 12:10

I don't know about those breeds (golden retriever owner here! Very moulty!) but there is a dog topic on MN where you may get more knowledgeable replies than in Chat.
Think it's called "The Doghouse"

I am used to that - I have a basset hound 😂

Not one of the breeds mentioned, I know, but I had a boxer whose grooming was very low maintenance. He loved being brushed, but hated grooming mits. He lost very little hair day-to-day.

Slobbery, though.

NorthernSpirit · 06/03/2023 13:05

I have a Vizsla.

The breed only has one coat and they don’t need grooming.

She does get thrown in the shower occasionally if she’s rolled in something or has been for a swim in the Thames.

They shed a small amount (minimal) - drops the odd ginger eyelash.

I’ve had Weimaraners for 25 years and love the breed - grooming-wise they’re very low maintenance, any hair they shed tends not to show up and I only use a grooming mitt on mine when I remember.

These are my 2, the GSP is a rescue and never sheds. The Viszla leaves ginger hair that weaves into everything! Amazing dogs

Thankyou all. Evidently, looks can be deceptive where short fur and grooming are concerned. Do you notice any difference in your dogs' coats with the changing seasons?

My wire haired Vizsla. They are known as self cleaning and non moulting. True, water is clean after a bath BUT house gets covered in gritty dirt after a walk.

mine don't grow anything noticeably different in winter.

I met a pair of Weimaraners a couple of weeks ago and I was surprised just how big they were. I guess they were both boys but they were approaching Great Dane proportions in terms of height off the ground. Still lean and muscular though. Very handsome pooches. Conversely, I also met a GSP yesterday who was just a few months old and considerably smaller than the Weimaraners. She attracted quite a fan club!

Have had a GSP and the fur shed constantly and just just sort of knitted itself into fabrics and was impossible to remove. Magic mud shedding qualities though as said dog always looked immaculate. I’d have another in a heartbeat though in spite of the 3 hours minimum of exercise daily and the extra housework.

14month old boy is massive, I can confirm. I forgot how big he was until friend brought her Jack Russell round this weekend!

PointerSister · 15/03/2023 16:21

GWP owner here and I have learnt to strip her myself. Very little moulting and after having a black lab for years she dries so quickly too! But yes to the swimming pools of water she leaves when she has had a drink 😂🤦‍♀️. Best dog ever though 😍
