Am I hallucinating or are there nocturnal ducks?

About an hour ago I went to put some stuff in my outside bins and could hear a duck quacking, which is wierd as my nearest pond is about 20 mins walk away. Going to bed now and the house is silent, windows closed, but I can hear the duck, NON STOP.

I thought ducks slept at night? Is it in distress? I definitely am... its very loud...

Thanks for the detailed info! I have a vegetable ‘business end’ of the garden where I was thinking of keeping them, the pond is on the other side. Was also thinking of the plastic shell so thanks for confirming. I have an omlet eglu, empty at the mo as the hens were just too noisy. Do you think that could do as a home? I loved my chooks, I hatched buff orpingtons. No one complained and I love their babbling but the egg song got just too much. Love duck eggs for eating and baking so was thinking of 3 or so ducks and quail? Thanks again x

Frogs sound a lot like ducks, so it could be frogs in a neighbour's pond.

I hear birds at night and I'm sure that's new

can't see why ducks would be different, grumbling about insomnia maybe.

I got up to use the toilet at 2.30 am and I could hear a bird singing which I thought was weird.
Dawn chorus usually starts around 4.30 am this time of year.

It's probably what we call a quacker in my language. I live next to a pond and we have one most years. It's a duck that annoyingly quacks a lot for a long time every night until he's finally mated. By the time he's finally mated I have decided that if he keeps me awake again I'm going to kill it. It lasts two weeks or so but massively annoying loud duck.

That’s right, it’s completely ducking quackers….

<hastily pulls coat on and scurries towards exit>

I second the hedgehog suggestion - I was once woken up by quacking and thought there was a duck trapped under my car. When I looked under with a torch, I startled 2 mating hedghogs.

@ChiefPearlClutcher the girls I have are way quieter than the hens.they either lay when I let them out in the morning or will drop them randomly in dirt 😂 and they have bags of character. They don’t like change though so when u first set up-put the four where it will stay as the won’t eat put out it if you move it 😂😂

Maybe it’s a corncrake, they call at night

TheClash2023 · 06/03/2023 17:58

We have a bastard owl who screeches all night at the moment. He or she sits on my garden wall

hope your night is more peaceful OP!

Foxes.... especially fox kits. They sound just like ducks {thought I had ducks in my garden, but a torch showed it to be foxes splashing and ''Quacking'' in a big water bowl . {at about 2am}

Someone in our village fb group posted today about frequently heard nocturnal cows. Someone else said they don’t think it’s a cow…..but a more human type of mooing. Appreciate quite a few houses heard it 😆😆
