Waters broken - still no contractions :(

Hi everyone,

My waters have been leaking in rather big gushes since 8am. Currently in hosp and have confirmed that waters are rupturing. I’ve lost quite a fair bit now but still no contractions or pains… they will start the hormones in the morning if nothing progresses but hoping they just start on their own!

Any experiences of waters breaking and failing to progress further than that??

How exciting! My waters broke and baby was in my arms two hours later, but I was told it could take 12 hours or more. If you're not in pain and in safe hands at the hospital, rest/sleep/eat as much as possible now because it's going to happen very soon Grin

FourBoysAndAFeline · 05/03/2023 14:05

Yes me.

DS (3rd child, supposedly they are the ones that are complicated!) disengaged and turned back to back once my waters broke.

So because his head wasn't pressing on my cervix nothing happened.

And "induction" after your waters break is basically straight to the drip that starts the contractions.
So I went straight for the epidural, I've had natural births before and couldn't be arsed with going through the pain of one of those drips.
It took 6 hours for him to turn, then about 4-5 hours for him to be born after that.

Hes the only child I've had where I literally felt not one ounce of pain. Not one contraction! Very surreal, easiest one yet!

Good luck.

I had this OP! I remember how relaxed I felt when my waters brake, I'm sure that must have been hormonal, and I had no contractions that I could feel. Just over 12 hours later they kicked in and I was in a ton of pain. How exciting for you, good luck and I hope it goes well!

With my 3rd waters went at 3pm and contractions started at 4am following day. So 13 hours. Good luck

TheGriffle · 05/03/2023 14:39

My waters broke with dd2 and no contractions started. The hospital waited 24 hours and then gave me a pessary to start contractions. 5.5 hours after the pessary dd was here and I didn’t require any further intervention.

TheGriffle · 05/03/2023 14:42

I should say, we went in once my water broke (I was being monitored due to low water volume and had an induction booked in for 2 days time) they checked is over for a few hours and everything was fine so they sent us home overnight and we had to come in the next morning if no contractions by then.

More monitoring that morning then they let us out to go and get breakfast and I had the pessary at 12pm around the 24 hour mark after my waters broke. We had to both be monitored after the birth, temp checks as infection was a risk but apart from that all was fine.

ilovebagpuss · 05/03/2023 14:44

Because I thought there might have been some green in the waters they started me on the drip immediately.
Took about 10 hours all in as she was back to back position then at some point she turned and pop was out after a short stint of pushing.

Pinkflipflop85 · 05/03/2023 14:49

I was left for 36 hours after my waters broke. I then had an intensely painful sudden start of labour and an emergency c section.

Dc went straight to special care on a drop and I went straight to HDU because we both had sepsis.

Don't let them leave you too long and shout loud if nothing is happening.

Gatekeeper · 05/03/2023 14:55

happened with dd; waters broke just after midnight Monday but no contractions. These started later Monday but kept stopping and starting so backwards and forwrds to maternity hospital to be monitored and have temp taken. Labour proper started Tuesday night and the awkward bugger was born Wednesday morning!

YorkshireTeaCup · 05/03/2023 14:59

My waters broke at 5am and i was admitted. Contractions started naturally at 10pm that night and DD was born at midday the following day. They told me i would be induced if no contractions had started within 24hrs of waters breaking.

Like pp though, DD developed sepsis and had to spend two weeks in NICU / special care before we could come home. I also had an infection but i think that was due to the catheter I had.

Did you have a Group B Strep test at 35w ish? Don't be afraid to ask the MW about infection risk and ask about options if contractions still show no sign of starting.

DS1 waters complete broke in Sat, nothing Sunday, Hospital told me to come in on Monday
They induced me Monday afternoon as still nothing happening.
Straight into strong induced contractions which was a bit harsh - lots of monitoring but hospital was very very busy, Wednesday evening when I was exhausted, hungry and fed up but ok (so was baby) they offered me a c-section.
He was born at 12.30am in the Thursday - 3 weeks early. They would have got me in quicker if anything had gone wrong but other women were more urgent than me.
So with DS2 when my waters broke I still insisted on my planned section due that morning even though I did get contractions almost immediately - he was also 3 weeks early.
Apparently that's how long it takes for me to cook a baby.

Rachell1 · 05/03/2023 15:20

Thanks everyone. I’m quite stressed about the risk of infection. Waters went at 8am (well… started to go then, had many gushes since!).

They have no beds on labour ward so I cannot be moved to start the drip / opt for c section until tomorrow morning by the sound of things. In all fairness they have 24 hours apparently after waters breaking / starting to break before they need to induce or perform c section.

Just wish something would happen.. very tired and hungry already!

This happened to me. Waited a few days but nothing so was induced with pessary. Labour was fairly fast after that but it wasn't horrible. I had a water birth.

m1s · 05/03/2023 15:30

My waters broke just as I was going to sleep (like a bloody waterfall). Went to triage where they confirmed it. Stayed in on a monitor for an hour or two as my son had a fast heart rate so they wanted to make sure it had come down before letting me home.
They gave me a sweep just before I was going home and the contractions started straight away

AuntieObnoxious · 05/03/2023 15:31

This happened with DS. I rang hospital & let them know my waters had broken in the night. They told me to stay home until the contractions started or ring back at 6 pm if the hadn’t started. My contractions didn’t start naturally & they induced me the next morning. I wouldn’t worry, my labor was really easy, even being induced. Good luck.

Halfcenturytoday · 05/03/2023 15:51

My waters broke at 5am on the Saturday morning and DC was born at 8am on the Wednesday morning. I stayed at home until the Tuesday evening when they sent me in to be induced due to preeclampsia. In those days they allowed 96 hours between waters breaking and induction. They just monitored your temperature to check for infection twice a day. They gave me IV antibiotics during labour and DC was fine. They will be monitoring you for infection whilst you're in the hospital so try not to worry.

Peekingovertheparapet · 05/03/2023 15:58

Are you in the hospital OP? You might be better off at home. I went home and hung out until the contractions started. As it happens I don’t think he was putting even pressure on my cervix (back to back) and so I ended up with the drip and as it happens a difficult delivery.

im wondering if you could spend some time on hands and knees/leant forward? I had a similarly slow Labour with my second and I think that’s what got him into position. It’s definitely worth a try.

and if there are no beds it really might be best to be home.

Rachell1 · 05/03/2023 16:13

Hi @Peekingovertheparapet , yes I am in hospital now. I was thinking to go home too. Baby is back to back! So maybe you are right and I need to change up positions…

I am just waiting for midwife, she is double checking the bed situation in labour ward.. if there are no beds to start the drip today then I may very well go home x

goldengirly · 05/03/2023 16:15

You can sleep and eat! Just go about life as normal. Infection risk is low, you don’t have to be induced bang on 24 hours if you’d prefer to wait

Peekingovertheparapet · 05/03/2023 16:18

Definitely get on your hands and knees. And get moving as much as you can. If they start the drip you’ll quickly become less mobile. The old wives tale about scrubbing the floor is all about getting baby to move round into position.

Theawkwardblonde · 05/03/2023 16:30

My waters went and labour didn't start within 24 hours so I was put on the drip. I unfortunately ended up in a section after another day of non progressing labour (foetal distress and fault to progress past 4cm). Best of luck to you OP!

LakeTiticaca · 05/03/2023 17:01

My waters broke, had gushing then stopped. 24 hours started gushing again. Rang doctors. Told to go to hospital immediately. Put on a drip. Gave birth 8 hours later.
Next one: waters broke Sunday (2 weeks early) admitted to hospital. No contractions. 24 hours later induced and gave birth after 10 hours .
Next time, unknown amniotic rupture for 3 weeks. Admitted to hospital at midnight. Infection and foetal tachycardia. Gave birth at 7am. Slight jaundice and swallowed mucus. All well.
All of this happened 1989-1990s x

Mufflette · 05/03/2023 17:07

Yes, waters broke so I went in but nothing else was happening so I went back 24 hours later for induction - slightly dilated so no pessary and straight on to the drip. It took a good few hours for contractions to kick in and they were intense but I was fine with gas and air.

Definitely go home if it's an option to go back in the morning, it was lovely to be able to have a shower and go back into hospital knowing everything at home was ready for coming back home with baby!

One thing to be aware of is that I could have been discharged from delivery suite but we were kept an extra bit for monitoring due to the risks associated with waters going early. Still home later on that day though - overall a really positive experience!
