Do you have a mobility scooter? If so, how long ish does it take to charge?

We're trying to work out how long-ish it should take for Grandad's to charge. It's telling us it is fully charged after 3 hours.

Does that seem about right?

Mine charges fully in 8 hours but can top up in a couple of hours,

I don't let mine go below half life & it's fully charged after a couple of hours.

Thank you, Grandad's maybe isn't charging properly then. It's going from almost totally run down to "full" in three hours.

It depends on the size of the mobility scooter. Meaning is it a shoppers one or more powerful. Google the make and power of with charging time. That should help

My battery indicator isn't quite accurate I had an low battery drama last year so I now charge over night with top ups, just to be on the safe side.

@keffie12 thank you, I'll have a look for the make and power of it tomorrow at some point. He doesn't seem to be able to go far at all on it.

Mine is a powerchair not a scooter but I understand the batteries are similar if not the same. Try leaving it on charge for a bit after it says it’s fully charged, I was told it’s not full to the brim as soon as it shows charged. Also, it might be a faulty charger.

I only use mine for distance or on holiday. It can definitely last 2 days sightseeing or out and about. Is his new the battery could be faulty .?

lucysmam · 04/03/2023 20:35

@Mrsjayy no, it was second hand, recently, so maybe the battery is faulty or just old. He's only been down the hill & up again, to Lidl, and then down the road to his local shop today.

I'll investigate further tomorrow - it was bought in a bit of a hurry as he had a fall at the end of last week, after Nanna died and hers went back to the company very quickly. (He was determined to let everyone know asap).

You're welcome. There are things that can go wrong with them. I suggest you fund a local independent disability scooter shop and get it serviced.

Service is about £70 plus any parts where I am in Yorkshire. They will also check the battery life on it. They will advise if they need changing. You can still get bills with a scooter.

If the scooter hasn't got hard tyres, it would be advisable to get them fitted. Normal tyres and pavements aren't good because of the risk of flat tyres. I got mine changed. I have my scooter serviced yearly, too

Hope that helps. Other than the batteries, anything that goes wrong isn't usually expensive with scooters. You do need to keep an eye on it too.

If he is keeping it outside, make sure you get a cover for it to keep the bad weather off it

Mrsjayy · 04/03/2023 21:44

A service is a good idea, he should be able to get to the shops and back. Get him to charge the battery overnight see how it goes till you can get the service.
