Dressmakers, help please! What does DD need in a beginners dressmaking set?

DD 14 has developed a keen interest in dressmaking. So much so, she has unexpectedly chosen textiles as a GCSE option. She would love a dressmaking table ( to put her sewing machine on) in her bedroom. We’ve found a great little table with storage and I’d love to kit it out as a surprise for her birthday. Apart from a machine, fabric, scissors and needles, what else will she need? If anyone can offer any advice, I’d be most grateful as I can barely sew on a button!

Mood do free sewing patterns. If you buy pdf patterns you download them then you either send them away to get printed in a0 size or you print them out on a4 and stick them together with sellotape. Lots of places to get free or cheap quality patterns online - the traditional paper patterns are expensive in comparison.

Thanks so much for everyone's helpful replies. We have ordered some great kit and I'm sure DD will love her sewing station, which we are setting up while she's off on her school ski trip.

My favourite thing is the jamjar of mixed buttons- they look so cute!

Cutting board and rotary cutter. Weights for keeping things still as you cut with the rotary cutter- much easier and quicker than pinning and cutting a pattern!
Extra blades for the cutter
long quilters ruler.

decent scissors 3 -4” for snipping threads plus a pair about 5 “. Is she left or right handed?

office type adjustable chair to sit on whilst sewing.

Behind fabric marker. They do cost £10-12 but worth it.
the yellow paper you can get to trace pattern markings and lines onto fabric are also good

a set of 5 fat quarters fabric in coordinating colours is a good start . Not enough to make clothes but a good start for making smaller things to practice.

A fat quarter is about 50 x 50 cm of fabric .

Make sure she has storage. Somewhere for fabric, jars or clip boxes for odds and ends. You can get tidies for threads OH made one for me, basically a piece of wood with little bits of dowling where I could place each of the threads to keep them tidy. Make sure she keeps her fabric scissors seperate so they're only used on fabric, scissors for paper/general use and a small pair.
Also we have a roller which I suspect is meant for pet hair, it's a bit sticky and can be washed, good for picking up the stray tread and bits of trims that come off.
You can get a basic book from amazon of basic dress/skirt patterns with instructions on how to draft them. You'll need drafting paper.

It can be fun but expensive.
