Child dealing with period on residential - Recommendations please!

Peggy0907 · 04/03/2023 14:19

DD is 10 and is more than likely going to be on her period during her school residential. She's going for 4 nights. She already uses period knickers so I will make sure to send her with enough to get her through the whole time she's there. I'm looking for recommendations for a way for her to store the used knickers discreetly. Also looking for period swimwear, preferably bikini bottoms that she can wear under her usual costume.
Anything else I need to think about? School will administer pain relief if she needs it.

Try looking at Modibodi for the swimwear - my DD uses a costume from there and really rates it, very comfy, discreet and no leaks.

For the period pants can she just put them in a carrier bag in her main bag and then you can rinse and wash when she comes home?

I have these which are useful for pads/period wear or swimming stuff

Loads of different patterns available

My daughter took a washable nappy bag to put her used ones in on cadet camp. I had the bag from when I used washable nappies, so just got it out of the attic, but they're not super expensive to buy. They have a plastic lining inside the bag so they weren't going to make a mess of her bag and ours has a zipper so even more sealed.

Contact school so they know she's started her period and that she might need pain relief. When we run camps, it's really helpful to know from parents if a child is due their period so we can discretely check they're okay/need supplies/had a leak etc etc.

Wet bag/nappy bag seems like what I'm looking for, thanks. I did think about just a carrier bag but was a bit worried about any smells etc. The bathrooms are separate from their sleeping areas so she won't really have a place to rinse them out properly and leave them to dry.

She has the modibodi period shorts which she loves, I was looking at getting just bikini bottoms though as the full costume is quite expensive and presumably she won't be able to wear it more than once without washing it? So my logic was if I can find cheapish bottoms I could send her with 2 pairs for both swimming activities. Will look on modibodi again, thank you.

I was taught your period doesn't come out in water (swimming) and mine never did. So she may not need anything/could happily use her period bikini bottoms twice. Or, they'd probably be fine if she just rinsed them out between uses and they get washed back at home. The rest of it sounds fine and hope she has a good time

I used to swim a mile most lunchtimes including on my period. Honestly it was fine. Doesn't spurt or leak. Try it before you belittle me?

I agree with you, swim many times with my period and the flow seems to stop when in the water

Beamur · 04/03/2023 22:28

Look up washable sanitary pads. You can find little zip up bags designed to store used ones. They are leak and smell proof for a few days.
Or, you could speak to your GP - there are medicines that will stop a single period.

Qwertyk3y · 04/03/2023 22:30

If an option you could get the pills that delay periods from your GP

I'm sure this is true as well but if she's standing around after the activity/before entering the pool (listening to instructions or similar) it's going to be very uncomfortable for her. Oh I feel for her, I hope she copes fine and it doesn't bother her too much. You sound like a lovely mum!

namechangeagaintoday · 04/03/2023 22:33

I fully appreciate you might not want this route but I take tablets to delay my period if I'm going on holiday. You need them at least 3 days before it's due and it's 3 a day though.

FiftyNotNifty · 04/03/2023 22:33

My 11 year old has the same coming up...I'm going to the Gp to get the medication to delay her period. Did the same for her big sister at the same age.

Nah otherwise the bath would look like a scene from jaws! The water pressure stops it. Dd just wears her normal period pants in the water (clean ones) as they are the same material as bottoms and only needed really when she gets out etc. obviously fresh ones on when she gets changed

Rufffles · 04/03/2023 22:45

I just came here to say that I think it's lovely that you're trying so hard to find the right thing for her. What a lovely mummy you are! x

I think this is a common myth as we were told this in sex education as well (nineties kid here)

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 04/03/2023 22:54

The ModiBodi and Wuka black one piece period swimsuits are great. Plain, non-bulky, effective. Worth investing in one now as she can use for school swimming.

She can absolutely rinse it out and hang it up ready for the next activity- I’d expect most children to bring only one costume on a residential.

I agree that a period is unlikely to flow when you’re in water but the costumes make girls feel more comfortable.

tiredhadenough · 04/03/2023 23:00

There are some great disposable pants you can buy. Not good for the environment but we use for this type of thing when dd is on sleepovers etc. you can get two packs for £5

@TheGirlWhoLived the bath does look like a murder scene if I have one on my period though. Granted I have heavy flow, but I strongly suspect it's not that those with lighter flow don't bleed in water, just that it's sufficiently diluted not to notice...

Noodledoodledoo · 04/03/2023 23:11

A tip I read is stomping on them whilst she is in the shower will rinse out the pants etc. I have done it whilst on holiday and needed to rinse them out as running out. Just need somewhere to hang them to dry which could be tricky - however if a girl I had away on a trip needed me to, I would hang in a staff/leaders bathroom.

TenThousandSpoons · 04/03/2023 23:12

I would also give her the delaying pills so that she doesn’t have to deal with her period while away, especially if they are swimming. The pills are very small so easy to take but she will have to take 3 times a day the whole time she’s away. I think that’s easier than dealing with soiled period pants and rinsing blood out of swim wear.

This is a myth. You clearly don't have heavy periods!!

I can confirm, from brutally embarrassing experience, that this is a myth. I'm sure for some people it's fine and they can swim freely. I, however, continue to bleed when in water.

JamBiscuitBun · 04/03/2023 23:55

There's a very easy solution to this. Go to the gp in enough time and get the pill that delays periods. Get her to take it for enough days to knock the period before her trip off-schedule. Then her next period (due during the trip) will fall before or after the time she's away.
