What have police forces done to change and what still needs to be done?

Please don't go off on a police bashing (or supporting) tangent. We all know it's not all police officers, but it's too many and there is a problem with the ingrained culture. 800 under investigation in the Met alone is something even they are not trying to say is insignificant.

We all need a functioning police force that has public confidence and we don't have that currently, so what needs to be done? What has been done already?

e.g has there been any training around unconscious bias? Who's delivering that? Internal or external?

In schools it's a criminal offence not to report suspected wrongdoing by colleagues. Should police officers be held to the same standards?

What's happening about reporting and recording low level concerns? Things like use of inappropriate language, or dodgy searches on Google, minor complaints against an officer, which may not be the biggest issue as a one off, but are when there's a pattern, demonstrating an underlying attitude.

How are officers responding to all this? Is it a defensive reaction or a desire to see things improve?

What can people in the know tell us about how things are changing and what would you like to see done?

We have not had any unconscious bias training or any form of 'stonewall' training. The majority of our training concerns changes to various laws. Most of it is done by email or computer based training which we never get chance to do properly in any case.

We have always had an anonymous reporting system - where we can report things like inappropriate language etc. and it does get used from time to time - bad decisions at jobs, uniform standards etc etc

Stop & search is heavily audited now with every submission scrutinised. However, this means that hardly any are done which has increased the number of complaints from communities wanting more stop & search in their area.

Random drug & alcohol tests have increased - so you can't now have a drink after work as it will show up in any test the next day. Increased vetting has started too and mobile phones are examined and any social media accounts examined.
