Anyone had ear pinning surgery (pinnaplasty) as an adult?

I’m waiting for a date for ear pinning surgery. I’ve met with 2 surgeons, chosen one and will find out next week the date I’ll be getting it done (should be in the next 6-8 weeks).

I’ve never known anyone get it done as an adult - I remember a friend in primary school getting it done but no one since.

My ears have always bothered me and unfortunately it bothers me more as I get older. One ear is slightly worse than the other but they both stick out very very noticeably.

I’m wondering what the recovery is like? I’m self employed and can work from home for as long as necessary but not keen on staying away from the office for longer than I need to as I still need to oversee things.

has anyone not got the results they anticipated? I’ve been made aware this is a risk although a fairly small risk.

Im 32 and have 3 children (5,11,13). I worry I’m setting a bad example by taking such extreme measures to adapt my appearance but my confidence is so low as a result of my ears, I feel I don’t have much of a choice.

any advice would be hugely appreciated

Sorry I've no advice as I have no experience of this. But I wanted to just say that I think what you're doing is fantastic. If you want your ears done, 100% you should feel confident to have them done.

My child is 7 and has very sticky out ears. I've thought about getting them done for a couple of years and have recently decided to do it this year.

I've yet to hear anyone say they regret it!
Well done OP, wishing you a speedy recovery.

Hello OP!

I had a bit of an ear journey with mine.
Had them done when I was around 8/9 and the pain afterwards was horrible. When the bandages came off, it was clear it hadn't worked.
Done again a year or so later and this time it did work only I've been left with keloid scar tissue. One of my ears has a really large lump on the back of scar tissue which I ended up having to have removed under a local anaesthetic.
The surgeon warned me that this may always be an issue due to the skin behind the ears being thin.
And sure enough I had to have it done again when I was around 19. Under local again, and I could hear them scraping at the back of my ear 🤢

I've been left with ears that are lovely and flat from the front. However one is practically fused to the side of my head with scar tissue at the back and the other is just badly scarred at the back.
A friend at uni was considering having it done when we were in our 20's and I strongly advised him against it, telling him about the issues I'd had.
He went ahead and did it anyway and ended up with very similar issues with keloid scar tissue.

If it affects your confidence that much, go for it. But beware the possible complications!

Good luck 😊

My son has also inherited my ears @SunsetBlue and I have broached the subject with him but he insists it doesn’t bother him and doesn’t want to change his ears. I wish I was more like him! My girls have inherited their fathers ears, thank god!

@wishihadagoodone that sounds horrific and I have read similar stories online. It definitely made me reconsider but I do think I need to give it a go.

they’re doing it under general anaesthetic - my surgeon said he would only do mild cases under local. I’m rather squeamish so would rather have a nap whilst they crack on with it anyway 😂

My kids seem to have inherited my ears also but maybe kids are just kinder these days than they were in the 80's/90's because there's never been any name calling or bullying like I experienced, thank goodness!

My two actual pinnaplasty surgery's were under general too. Just the keloid scar tissue removals were under local. They said if it keeps occurring they would consider steroid injections directly into the the tissue but honestly, the injection of the local anaesthetic was the most painful bit. I remember being mortified by how much I cried 😂

I wasn’t an adult , I was 14 , mine was relatively mild , one stuck out but the other was quite flat
I don’t remember the pain tbh ( if there was any) but I did wear a bandage for about 2 weeks , though procedures have probably changed by now

I had mine done when I was 13. I had to wear a bandage around my head for a week. I don't remember any issues - a little pain the first day or two managed by paracetamol. My parents took us away in the caravan for that week so apart from trying to shower in the shower block without getting my head wet I don't think it could have been too bad as I remember enjoying the holiday.

After a week I went back for a checkup and the bandage was removed. I think that was it really. The site had scabbed over and I think we just had to be careful not to rip it off. I remember the worst part was trying to sort out my hair afterwards. After not being washed for a week and being trapped under a big sweaty bandage in August my hair was matted at the roots and just awful.

TMI my scab eventually fell off when I was back at school. I felt something tickle my neck and when I put my hand up the scab had gone. It was on the floor next to my chair. I'm ashamed to say I was so embarrassed by this massive black scab that I left it there and prayed no one noticed. Unfortunately when the bell rang and we were dismissed one of the louder boys noticed it and starting shouting and pointing at the massive scab. Fortunately no one realised it was mine although how they didn't is beyond me. I must have been beetroot with embarrassment!!

I had it done at age 15 and as I recall I had to wear a bandage wrapped around my head for a week. I don’t recall any pain and it must have been mild if there was any. When the bandage came off my ears were a bit swollen which was normal and it took a few weeks for them to reduce. This was late 80’s so I would have thought techniques have have been perfected by now.

Just thought I’d update the thread incase there’s anyone else considering pinnaplasty.

I had bilateral pinnaplasty on Tuesday (2 days ago). I paid £3750 for the procedure and that included one overnight stay.

I cannot fault the care the hospital gave me. They really went above and beyond. Once the anaesthetic wore off I was in some considerable pain Tuesday evening and all of yesterday but have managed it with cocodamol.

I’m really struggling with sickness and I can’t really keep any thing down so I’m relying on my sons stash of Jolly Rancher sweets for calories at the moment 😂

The pain isn’t as bad today and I managed to get about 2 hours sleep last night. Sleeping is very difficult as the bandage is so huge.

I have an appointment next Thursday evening to go and have the bandages removed. It can’t come soon enough. There’s no way I’m leaving the house with this monstrosity on 😂
my DP has been wonderful in picking up the slack with the kids and can’t do enough for me.

I feel an overwhelming feeling of selfishness for doing all this in the name of vanity but my DP and DC couldn’t be more supportive. I’m very lucky.

My daughter had it done when she was about 25. She didn't want it done as a child but it bothered her more when she grew up. She's so pleased to have sorted it. She had it done privately under local anaesthetic.

SG2023G · 28/03/2023 17:07

My daughter is 24 and wants this surgery. Can anyone recommend a surgeon at the BMI Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle Cheshire please?
