After a day trip we took recently to London we was absolutely shocked by how many people there was smartly dressed in business suits and briefcases in hand with an absolute pace of walking or running to get the soonest tube they could do. Also the amount of money these people must get paid if there travelling each day into London
And its got us thinking what is that people who work in London actually do for their job? And how much is your pay? so if thats you would you mind sharing with me

Until recently I worked in central London. Procurement role. Approx £70K

I work in financial services and travel into central London once or twice a week. But I don't pay for the train tickets, it's not my base office so the company pays.
A complete waste of money when I could work from home like I do the rest of the week, but if they want to spend it, I'll go in.

Where were you- the city?
I live and work in Westminster- no-one is smart - its civil service land.

Doje · 02/03/2023 20:56

I worked in a retail head office in zone 1.

Lived zone 2 but got the bus into town, was v. cheap.

No briefcases- lots of expensive backpacks

London public transport is actually
pretty reasonable. I cycle to work - I manage research grants at a uni, used to do similar at a charity. I don’t think London that’s different to other cities like Manchester, just bigger.

StillWantingADog · 02/03/2023 20:59

Literally millions of people do this! Have you never been to a big city with, um, commuters?

what exactly did you think London was full of?

ItsCalledAConversation · 02/03/2023 20:59

Web/ ad agency, Soho (Oxford Circus)
Telecomms company, City
Ad agency, south bank

London has changed since lockdown but it was like a party every day, working there in my 20s. Take me back!

I got to London from the doldrums midlands on a job that paid £27k, I remember eating rice for lunch as I was so strapped. I got promoted several times and earned up to 65k while there.

Were you on the various 90s threads? Ah, London was such fun!

Work in construction £70k. Have to wear smart clothes.

Er. Sorry to put this so bluntly, but haven't you ever visited a large city before? Because you do sound very... Country Mouse.

Millions and millions of people work in Central London. It's the centre of finance and government and culture and fashion. And they do everything conceivable, from cleaning toilets for minimum wage to earning Megabucks in City law.

Haha I thought exactly this. Not that unusual for people to dress smartly for work in a city!

AddictedtoStarmix · 02/03/2023 21:05

Work in third sector, so definitely not well paid. Quite smartly dressed though and usually in a rush.

StillWantingADog · 02/03/2023 21:07

I am genuinely surprised about the smart people though. Our industry has gone very casual whether we are in the office or not (and we’re mostly not Tbf). I thought most non-uniformed l industries were going the same way.

doadeer · 02/03/2023 21:07

I've worked in central London all my adult life and now do a blend. I work in marketing for technology companies. Have worked in Covent garden, King's Cross, Farringdon, Paddington and DH works just off Oxford St. We both earn quite a lot (not me at moment as childcare) but we work in high paid industries.

anythingbutlillies · 02/03/2023 21:15

Sales, not particularly smartly dressed though, £80k. Work pay my travel.

wednesdayrobyn · 02/03/2023 21:16

I started on £18k as a buying assistant commuting from zone 4. Now live zone 5 (South East so actually not that far out as it sounds) and my last job before becoming a sahm was £32k. Husband started on £16k and now makes 6 figures. However I would say neither of us have ever had to dress particularly smart for any of our jobs over the years.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 02/03/2023 21:17

Always worked in central London- have lived in zone 2/3/4 over the years. I’m an assistant - don’t earn 6 figures but decent enough.
