Reaction to MMR

My son 21months had his first injections Tuesday last week. For the first few days he couldn't bend his legs or he'd cry in pain. Other that that he was okay...until 2 nights ago, since then he's been running a fever at 39. Ibuprofen has been bringing it down but when it wears off it ramps back up. Last night he had a fever and was shivering. He's not slept soundly these past 2 night, waking up crying in the night. I managed to get him to sleep earlier at about 7.30ish n he woke up about 10 crying, nothing would calm him, his was flailing around like he was in pain, I tried giving him a drink and something to eat but he refused, further crying, trying to bite me, kicking me, slapping me (this is unlike him). He finally accepted pain relief and has calmed down but has started coming out in spots randomly around his body. He's very pale and still short tempered with the slightest thing but is calm, currently laid in my bed in my arms. Is he okay? I've read kids can have this reaction but he seemed in so much pain earlier

With the spots and temp i’d ask for a dr to take a look at him.
reaction should only be a few days and it’s been over a week.
it could be that he’s picked up a bug not linked to injections.

The nurses who gave him the injections told me he could get poorly from the mmr roughly 5 days after but that it would just make him abit fussy

Yeah I agree with pp it's a bit long for it to be linked to the injections, normally you'd see a reaction within a day or two. With the spots coming up is it maybe chickenpox? I'd ring the gp in the morning if he's still not himself or if he gets worse overnight ring the out of hours gp for a look over.

The reaction to MMR (for the measles component) can start days 7-11 after the injection and for mumps 3-4 weeks after the injection. This is NHS info.

Not sure where people are getting the information that a week or so after MMR is not the right time to have a reaction.

I hope your little one is feeling better OP.

OP, I just looked at the NHS website again and it sounds like your little one could have a mild form of measels.

He's had it very late, giving him time to contract the actual illness; it's unlikely to be a reaction. Are his other imms up to date? Please don't use this as an excuse not to vaccinate him again.

Why is it unlikely to be a reaction to the MMR? According to the NHS these are common side effects of the vaccine and the time frame of symptoms is just right.

OP should of course consult the GP if she is worried.

It's more likely to be an infectious illness than a vaccine reaction because infectious illnesses are much more common. It's maths. And he's had his MMR far too late.

My DD had something similar in terms of temperature and constantly screaming and crying. GP didn't have an appointment for six hours, but as receptionist could hear her, I was told it would be escalated to an emergency if she got any worse.

GP confirmed it was one of the parts of MMR kicking in and working. He said if she hadn't had it, if she'd caught one of the illnesses, she'd have been really bad.

Hope he's OK.

I hope your son is feeling better soon. My son falls into the category of unlikely reactions to a whole host of things.. (he has certain gene mutations which put him in a higher risk category based on what limited research there is in this area). It is unlikely that anyone would ever be able to definitively prove that he has reacted or not... but clearly he is not well.

Are you saying the child contracted the actual Measles/Mumps/Rubella because the OP "waited too long" to vaccinate or are you saying that an older child is bound to have more serious side effects after the vaccine? Frankly, both of these are ridiculous statements.

The NHS clearly states that high fever, feeling unwell, loss of apetite and a rash can happen 7- 11 days after MMR and they have this listed under Common Side Effects.

But I think you should contact the NHS and ask them to change the side effects of MMR to "no reactions possible ever".

You are so desperate to defend the vaccine that you will even dismiss what the NHS is saying and quickly shift the blame onto the mother for "waiting too long to vaccinate" when you have no idea why she had to or chose to wait.

ChateauMargaux · 02/03/2023 07:49

Liposomal vitamin C might be useful in helping with the pain but do go and see your GP.

  1. I'm not the one crowdsourcing medical advice
  1. Delaying vaccines increases the window of opportunity for contracting illness
  1. Most imms delays are due to parental choice

Hi guys, my 3.5 year old had his MMR booster and 4 in 1 jabs three weeks ago. Within 24 hours of the jab his had diarrhoea. This has continued consistently every day since. Some days he need to urgently go once or twice a day and then on bad days like today he had to urgently go 7 times. It was every time he ate a snack or a meal. I was feeling relatively calm about it for first two weeks as GP said not to worry unless it was going on longer than two weeks, we are over three weeks now so I’m now low level freaking out that he’s has an awful reaction the the vaccines. He’s been himself in other ways, normal son, less hungry but himself. It’s just been this awful tummy that’s the worry and now in middle of this heatwave. The gp gave us a pot for a sample which we managed to get this eve and will hand over tomorrow morning. Has anyone else experienced this? I’ve tried to research but nothing really clear, trying not to also panic about the jab’s possible link with inflammatory bowel disease. Looking for reassurance please. 🙏

FloHou · 05/10/2023 02:01

Kath so sorry to hear this, is he any better?

Bry1988 · 04/10/2024 08:59

My daughter is experienced every symptoms you've mentioned, fever only being brought down with ibuprofen, very pale, come up in a rash, eating okish but gone off of fluids, took her to the docs and she stated it's not normal for it to go on this long (had her jabs on the 23rd) so requested a urine test and wanted a blood test for her, my daughter looks so pale and is totally not herself.
