Has anyone got their Irish passport since Brexit?

Both DH and I have Irish parents. FIL died a long time ago and his birth cert is barely holding together and barely legible. My mum is still relatively young and I could use hers but I've heard the process takes ages and it might get lost.
Has anyone applied using a birth certificate and how long did it take? The form does look complicated.
Secondly, our DD's also would like one- if I get mine as the child of an Irish citizen are they then considered first generation rather than second?

Hey guys, I know this thread is old. I’ve submitted an application for an Irish passport. They have requested a lot of documents including a ‘cover page’. It might sound daft, but what is this? Do they mean a cover page to let them know what is enclosed?

im also to send my dads full birth certificate. I’m scared this will go missing.

I got duplicates of all certificates. My dad’s is from the 1930’s and I thought it might disintegrate. It can all be ordered online now.

i did a “cover page” although it wasn’t requested as I did all 4 of us so some of the documents applied to more than one person. Maybe I’ve started something 😂

it was basically a page with who was the applicant at the top.

then a list of documents of what that application “pack” contained with it’s relevance.

so:

lastnamedidn’t xx/xx/xxxx
birth cert
address documents
proof of ID

irish born parent: last name dad xx/xx/xxxx
birth cert
death cert

I used their list of documents to make a checklist that I’d included everything.

@Lastnamedidntstick thank you for responding. Were you able to send copies of you passport? This is the exhaustive list I’ve been asked to provide.

  • Cover page
  • Identity Verification Form
  • Applicant's full civil birth certificate
  • Copy of original passport, certified colour copies of ID are acceptable. Witness to certify.
  • Proof of name (bank statements)
  • Proof of address (letter)
  • Irish born parent’s full civil birth certificate
  • Copy of parents marriage certificate

Maybe it’s different for NI then as I’ve just been through this process and I did not need to apply to the FBR as my parent was irish and born in Dublin.

my children do though as I was not born in Ireland.

My mother was born in Belfast and never held an Irish passport. I was born in England. I didn't have to go on the foreign birth register.

Loadsofmoggies · 03/04/2024 18:15

I’ve got my application in currently. I applied online and the tracking estimate is 20 working days.
My parents are both Irish born so I am ‘automatically’ eligible for an Irish passport. I obtained a copy of my mother’s birth certificate as I didn’t want to lose the original.

If my kids wanted to apply for Irish passports they would have to go on the register of foreign births and I think it would take a bit longer.

goldenretrievermum5 · 03/04/2024 18:16

Yep! Never been more grateful to be from NI!

It is really not difficult.
You gather the information to apply for citizenship first.
Look on the Irish Embassy website, it is explained step by step on there.
Once you have got your citizenship confirmed, you can apply for the passport.
It is a 2 stage process.
You can deal with the Irish embassy in any country.
Photocopy everything and make sure anything you post goes to right department by recorded delivery.
DC1 only got his citizenship as he hasn't really needed the passport until now, so he is just doing the PP application at the moment. DC2 got citizenship then applied for PP straight away as they travel in Europe a lot for work.

fiftyandfat · 03/04/2024 18:26

When DC1 did it, both processes together took a few weeks. But that was immediately after Brexit happened. The population of Ireland went up by thousands in those few weeks!

Looks about right.

you only need marriage certs if a name has been changed and doesn’t match the birth cert.

another reason I am glad I didn’t change my name!!

@OrangeBlossomsinthesun you qualify as your mum was born on the island of Ireland. An NI parent makes you eligible for an Irish passport

Oblomov24 · 03/04/2024 18:34

Blimey I didn't realise the wait was a year. Dh has one because his dad was Irish. I need to get ds's application in soon!

It’s nowhere near a year now. Average is about 3 weeks if you apply online, they’ve improved the system a lot

Yes I was talking about a previous póster who said her Belfast born Dh's children had to go on the foreign birth register.

Turmerictolly · 02/05/2024 23:34

The cover page is a document you print off when you apply online.
