Tips to manage clutter at home?

Any good tips? One in one out sounds good. But due to the cost of living I'm reluctant to let things go for examples clothes don't care if they're faded etc but if they have a hole in the crotch area they're going.

Amazon zip lock vacuum bags. Clothes in, vacuum on = everything stored in a third of the space. Revisit after a year and decide if you still want anything.

Oh, and a basket (if you're nice) or a pile (my chosen way) for each member of the house. Whip through the rooms - everyone's stuff gets put in their own pile. They are responsible for carrying their pile upstairs and putting it away etc.

If it’s clothes clutter you’re dealing with (too much laundry) then just get rid. Honestly.

In fact, that goes for most clutter. If you have too much of something so that you can’t put things away, reduce until you can. Regardless of ‘might be useful in the future’. Chances are it won’t be useful in the future as it’ll be broken, out of date or otherwise unsuitable.

Get rid of it.
If you have clutter, you won't find whatever it is that you kept because it might be useful one day.

I kind of agree with this but also see the OP’s point. I asked for socks for my Christmas last year. I got lots of socks, for a while I had too many socks but as over time they’ve got holes in etc I’ve really appreciated not needing to buy more to replace them. Similarly I had some occasion dresses in my wardrobe that I haven’t had cause to wear for several years. Got invited to two events around Christmas and was so grateful to not have to buy something to wear as well as pay for the event as that would have made it unaffordable. I wouldn’t keep tons of clothing I don’t wear but basics that do wear out (vest tops, pants, socks, leggings etc) and dressy stuff I wouldn’t get rid of only to need to re-buy later down the line.

@Orcubed I'm like that too especially with socks and other essentials. Learnt the hard way to keep spares as your more used clothes wear out faster. The it's endless routine of buying using and getting rid.

  • If there is an area in your home where stuff particularly accumulates eg kitchen table, spend 2 mins per day sorting it out (Flylady method).
  • Go round your home, find 30 things to get rid of. Don’t overthink it.
  • Do 30 day declutter challenge. There are loads on the internet. Spend 15 mins per day.

I have areas i keep clear. So console table in hall is a dumping ground so i try to keep it clear. I don't keep anythjng in its drawers so i can quickly sweep stuff in if in a rush. Likewise the island and table in the kitchen. I'm obsessive about people putting their shoes in the shoe cupboard and hanging coat and bags up. If you don't put things down where they don't belong its much easier to manage. Inside my cupboards is hellish though. And i seem to have a playmobile family living in my sofa.

chanceofpear · 02/03/2023 16:35

Making yoursef keep areas clear makes you much more ruthless abiut getting rid of things if there is no where for it to go.

Clothes are a massive problem in my house.
