At this moment in time you are successful if you have a roof over your head, food on the table, pay your bills and tuck your kids into a safe, warm bed at nighttime.

The sad thing is that many successful people, like nurses and teachers, are struggling with that right now.

If you're genuinely happy, what more is there?

FourTeaFallOut · 01/03/2023 15:23

Health, security, friendship? You could be high as a kite and as happy as a pig in shit, that's not winning for many people though.

MrsJessePinkmann · 01/03/2023 15:25

@GoodChat this is my point. These are the times we are living in.

SpringLobelia · 01/03/2023 15:25

Interesting question.

I am not content with my life. Ongoing depression; a child with SEN and who needs alot of support and who self harms. No external help. Struggling generally.

However we are solvent. We have loved ones around us. We have a supportive sschool. We are not in danger if losing oru home or starving or (hopefulyl) being in a war zone- although i remain concerned about Putin's willy waving and what that might mean.

So I conisder myself successful, generally speaking.

Having a husband who I love more than anything and anyone, and him feeling the same way about me.
A lot of people aren't so fortunate.

I wouldn't say a drugs high is genuine happiness.

That's wonderful, but what makes it a success rather than just a nice thing?

pickledpies · 01/03/2023 15:31

waking up every day and feeling excited

I had this feeling for a year when I lived abroad. I have also had it in periods of my life where I loved my work and friends.

sixfoot · 01/03/2023 15:32

For me it’s about purpose. My days are filled with purpose, in that I’m engaged with my work, activities and responsibilities in a positive way and feel fully content in what I do. I know my ‘why’.

astarsheis · 01/03/2023 15:33

Having a happy long marriage and family and being financially secure.
My DM died young and so did my two brothers. Health and fitness is very important to me. I am happy to have been a mum and seen my DC grow up and hopefully will be healthy and fit enough for any future grand-children.
I have been very fortunate and have had some amazing life experiences and enjoy giving up my time to improve the life of people that have not had the same even if just in small way.
I guess we all measure success differently

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 01/03/2023 15:44

Success is achieving what you want!

the older I get I see a good life is good health and 90% if not more of that is down to luck!

Hohohoholidays · 01/03/2023 15:46

Happiness and contentment- whatever is needed to become those 2 things will vary for everyone

Moxysright · 01/03/2023 15:56

Success is whatever makes you feel happy/ loved. My definition is the family unit my partner and I have created for our children.

redrovers · 01/03/2023 15:59

IMO - happily married, homeowner with a half decent job and happy kids would be my idea of success

catfunk · 01/03/2023 16:01

Happy / fulfilled, financially stable (not rich just enough to not stress about money) good relationships romantically and with friends

Zuffe · 01/03/2023 16:03

Self-confidence.
Happiness.
Sexual organs that have worn out rather than just rusted away.

NoodleStrudel · 01/03/2023 16:13

Happiness, and having made a positive difference to the world and people in it - even in such a tiny way like having smiled at strangers or helped people in small ways that improved their life or mood somehow.

Mariposista · 01/03/2023 16:30

Getting up each morning and going to work in a job that you enjoy, not one that you dread going to. Never mind the salary as long as it pays the bills. Good relationships with friends and family. Being kind and not moody. Having a good diet and taking regular exercise.

judesxmumx · 01/03/2023 16:35

Inner peace - a calm peaceful, happy home for my son and I.

Chewbecca · 01/03/2023 16:39

I disagree with health - you can be successful with less than great health and health is just so uncontrollable.

I think it is, or should be content.

But people actually mainly use the term to describe financial success.

MassiveSalad22 · 01/03/2023 16:41

Happy

MintJulia · 01/03/2023 16:41
