Is alcohol going out of fashion?

Many of my close circle have cut right back & a few have gone teetotal. I understand to a point. They don't have time for hangovers etc. Just wondering is this a rising trend or just in my circle. I'm not a big drinker, I enjoy a few glasses of wine over the weekend but thinking of gradually phasing it out..

I think it’s interesting that these days we get warnings that a program we might watch might show people smoking (yes really a warning !) but not a warning re people are eating fast food in this program . Smoking is 100 percent awful for your health so is eating loads of processed , deep fried food though..

I’m 51 and stopped nearly a year ago. My dh stopped too. I’d just had enough. We were drinking far too much though and had been for years. It took up too much head space and was making me ill.
My adult ds and dd don’t drink and the vast majority of their friends don’t drink or do drugs. Both experimented with both in their late teens but didn’t like how it left them feeling.

I notice how much our society is entrenched in a boozy culture, especially since stopping myself. Everything has alcohol. Supermarkets have offers on for Easter fgs.

I kind of hope it’s going out of fashion. It can be such a destructive drug.

Wine was my alcohol of choice in my 20s and early 30s. I'm 40 now (almost 41) and in the last couple of years I noticed that wine became a huge downer for me. Even one glass makes me sleepy and gives me a headache. I can do hard drinks (brandy's, gin etc.) but I don't drink those at home and rarely go out so 100% dry most months. Not a decision though, just kind of happened.

@bellac11 you ok? Weird assumption, we're talking about booze, not dogs. I've got two Labradors! 😂They ate my iris bulbs in the garden and had to get antihistamine injections. They've eaten loads of stuff they shouldn't have. They're next to me now aged 14. As I said, I read in a book that example I gave and thought it was interesting. Sorry if I touched a nerve or something, obviously not my intention Confused

My friends cant go anywere or enjoy themselves without alcohol So much so I have given up doing anything with them. Sad really.

New Year's Eve I had two champagnes and the rest of the night kombucha

I work in IT for an alcohol drinks company and while sales have been shifting back and forth a bit between on-trade and off-trade due to covid and changes in behaviour we are still seeing growth globally and in UK. Last year I got the biggest bonus, based mostly on company performance, I've had in the 10 years I've worked there.

Some brands are under allocation because we can't produce enough to meet demand.

So no, I don't think it is going out of fashion, but I certainly drink much less now than I used to, I suspect most women do as they go through different life stages.

It’s definitely changing. I work with some 18 year olds and when they go out it’s to nice cocktail bars or gin bars. Its not like when I was 18, we’d drink cheap alchopops and shots purely to get drunk as quickly as possible. My husband is in the military and says similar about the young trainees. His era are massive drinkers (still are) but the younger ones are more solitary and prefer to stay in their rooms and watch Love Island etc.

I think social media is a big thing. They want to take nice photos- fancy cocktails, beautiful holiday destinations, not getting snapped getting messy in a pub or going the likes of Magaluf.

Yes, I gave up 3 years ago because I was getting hangovers after just a couple of drinks. If you would like to too then read The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober by Catherine Gray.

I've never drunk alcohol and it would be great if the rest of society joined me. I wouldn't feel like such a stick in the mud nursing my fizzy drink.

Sorry but it's not going to happen. I love a nice glass of wine and so do many others. How about the other way round and you join me?

I couldn't care less what other people drink. Why would you?

SwordToFlamethrower · 02/03/2023 09:42

I make my own blackberry wine, got absolutely loads of it! Mmmmm

xogossipgirlxo · 02/03/2023 10:44

I'm 30, my husband 35 and we definitely drink less than our parents. My dad was shocked that we don't just fix ourselves drinks on Saturday evening or that my husband drinks beer maybe twice a year when we go out with friends to pub. Now I'm pregnant, so obviously no alcohol, but even before this, I had odd glass of wine 1 or 2x a month or as mentioned beer in pub.

Alright calm down 😂 that's how I feel. I don’t want to join you. A family member recently died from alcoholism. Literally drunk themselves to death. So yeah, I would prefer if alcohol wasn't around. I don’t care if you enjoy your wine nor am I judging you for it. I just would prefer a society without it.
