BA premium economy for flights to US- worth it?

piddocktrumperiness · 28/02/2023 18:38

I'm due to travel to LA this summer and have never flown that far for that long- it'll be direct flight with BA. On the return Premium economy seats look affordable and so I was wondering if they are worth the price or not. Economy standard is £500- premium is £100 extra.
I'm 5ft5, a nervous flyer, can't usually sleep on planes and do get circulation issues so will be wearing compression socks throughout. Do the premium seats offer value for money or shall I just stick to economy?

Any experiences will be greatly appreciated

That's a good price for the upgrade. If it were me I would go for it.

dizzydizzydizzy · 28/02/2023 18:45

I would definitely go for it. I just booked flights to the Caribbean on BA. Economy was £300 each, Premium £600. I booked 11 months in advance, the day the fare for the return flight was released.

On my last flight in BA economy I was sitting next to a 6'4" rugby players. The seats are incredibly narrow and through no fault of his own, he needed a lot of space widthways.

BA economy seats are extremely narrow. On for children or small slim adults.

I would say BA have the worst PE but for £100 it’s worth it for the extra bag alone!

What do you get for the extra money? Is it just more legroom/space between rows or does it include any of the following -- drinks, extra luggage allowance, separate check-in and boarding?
I've upgraded BA seats to Club Europe for as little as £40 e/w and it included all of the above plus lounge access, so can be well worth it. I appreciate it would cost much more to upgrade to Club World/Business on long haul flights, though.

280NeuerNamen · 28/02/2023 18:53

For £100 for that length of flight, I definitely would. BA premium economy isn’t amazing but has longer lent room, slightly better seats and some food advantages. But the extra leg room alone is worth it on that flight. We did it London to Las Vegas.

its nothing like business or first but definitely worth £100 in my opinion.

Badger1970 · 28/02/2023 18:53

We paid for premium economy to fly to New York and it was worth every penny. Seats were more spacious and it was a good experience. As we had a nightflight home, we stuck to economy and it was horrific. The seats are incredibly narrow and tight together.

NorthernSpirit · 28/02/2023 18:54

I say this as a regular traveller to the US (to NYC).

For the outbound flight to the US which will be during the day - I won’t bother with an upgrade and would fly economy.

For the extra money to upgrade there is no benefit for a daytime flight.

Coming back thought which is an overnight flight - I would recommend you upgrade. The extra leg room & larger seat is a real benefit for a night time flight.

Ilikewinter · 28/02/2023 18:57

For £100, 100% yes. I always fly in PE to LA, albeit not on BA.

rookiemere · 28/02/2023 18:58

Definitely do it for an overnight flight, the BA economy section is cramped.

pilates · 28/02/2023 18:58

Yes that is a good price for an upgrade

piddocktrumperiness · 28/02/2023 19:03

The flight home is an overnighter but the flight there is a day flight arriving late afternoon.
I've not travelled with BA in years and so having looked at their site- extra bag, smaller cabin and wider seats seems to be the distinguishing feature. Can't make sense of whether there are other perks or not.

There is a comparable flight with AA but that is also operated by BA so not sure what the difference is here

£100 more is a deal, I’d go for it.

Whycanineverever · 28/02/2023 19:22

We are going to NY this year. It was about £70pp to upgrade to PE coming back and I reckon that's well worth it. We will just be tired and want to get home so any extra space is worth it. Way out I figure my kids will be too hyped up to care where they are sitting.

AllWorkYoPlait · 28/02/2023 19:27

£100 is a bargain for a flight that long, especially for a night flight. I'm short but get restless legs and always appreciate the extra legroom. Haven't flown with BA for a number of years though.

If the codeshare is operated by BA then it will be a BA plane.

piddocktrumperiness · 28/02/2023 19:34

Thanks everyone

It’s so worth it.

JustKeepGoingThere · 28/02/2023 19:38

Definitely worth it. Premium economy is good

CobraChicken · 28/02/2023 19:39

Also worth noting, the only time I chose to go premium economy on a BA flight we'd pre-booked seats at the front of the PE section. For some reason they switched planes to one with a different seating arrangement, last minute, and so we got bumped up into business because our row of booked seats no longer existed in PE.

CC4712 · 28/02/2023 19:40

I would for £100 extra. If it was double- then no!

I know you didn't ask, but this site might be handy for working out which seat to pick: www.seatguru.com/

This one compares airlines and might give you an insight into whether premier economy is worth it. Have a fabulous time OP.

Helps if I include the link! www.airlinequality.com/review-pages/a-z-airline-reviews/

Partyandbullshit · 28/02/2023 19:44

I don’t fly BA so can’t comment on that. But please know that American Airlines is amongst the worst American Airlines, by almost every metric. If you can choose a flight on the BA website depending on which airline is running it - avoid the AA flight. Pick a BA aircraft.

piddocktrumperiness · 28/02/2023 20:12

Just booked the tickets- went with the premium economy on the way home as it is an overnight flight, couldn't afford the PE tickets on the way to LA. Cheeky to charge for seat selection too considering they are charging nearly £1500 for a return flight.

Won't bother with seat selection.

@Partyandbullshit I have heard a little since posting that AA are notorious. I've checked and it does seem that BA are operating the flight. My only experience trans Atlantic was with Norwegian Airlines and they were brilliant. For the dates I am going there really is not much in terms of choice; BA, Delta, United and Virgin. Virgin tickets I found were more expensive than BA.

BA premium economy is definitely worth the upgrade. It's a much nicer flight experience than economy with a smaller cabin, all the legroom you need and nicer food. I actually find the recline is so good on the seats that you can get a great nights sleep without feeling you've slept sitting up. You don't get lounge access generally but sometimes BA have deals on where if you spend a certain amount pp with them they will include it. Always nice to have.

LostMySocks · 28/02/2023 20:50

I've been bumped up a couple of times from PE. More likely if they've overbooked Economy. But they do tend to prioritise executive club members
