Help to find a veterinary placement

My DD needs to do a 1 month placement in July but is struggling to find a practice that will take her. Does anyone have any ideas or leads. She is in her 5th year of studies in France and needs a placement overseas. She has a UK passport and would like to experience vet care in the UK.

She is particularly interested in cows but would consider anything.

It may not be the side of veterinary work that she's planning on doing, but has she looked into a placement in a slaughterhouse alongside the statutory vet?

Frenchfancy · 28/02/2023 13:39

Thanks @DogInATent . I know she has covered slaughterhouses but I don't think she has considered it for her placement.

Have a look at the What I Wish I Knew About University Facebook page - I'm sure someone posted on there two or three days ago offering a vet placement, think it was sheep though.

Does she have any friends who live in other parts of the country, who she could stay with and do it there? In return, they could stay at yours for a while in the holidays. We offered this to one of DD's friends, but in the end she didn't need to take up.

Frenchfancy · 28/02/2023 17:08

@ifonly4 she is looking all over the UK. We'll worry about where to stay afterwards. We have accomodation in London sorted if needed.

@Frisbyflop Facebook is a good idea, there must be groups for UK vets and vet students.

There are thousands of vet practices in the UK, how many has she contacted? Could her uni put her in contact with any alumni that are working in practices in the UK? For instance I’m a vet and work for a South African couple, they regular have SA students and new grads in the practice.

Floralnomad · 28/02/2023 17:47

Contact a large group like IVC Evidensia and see if they can help out . Our vets is owned by them and we get a lot of students .

Fbawtft · 28/02/2023 17:57

Tell her to post on the Facebook group vetwings. It’s a group for students and often used to find placements. She may struggle to find one placement for a month as they tend to get booked up quickly but if she’s happy to split it between different places she might have more luck!
I hope she finds something

Her uni are not really giving any help. She has had no problems getting her placements here in France but they insist on a 4 week placement abroad. Her prof suggested the UK as she has a passport that the other students don't have and he said she would learn more in the UK.

I'm passing on all this information, she is very grateful.

If she is especially interesting cows she could ask Holstein Uk, The Ayrshire cattle society / Jersey cattle society to ask their members if they would take her.

Is it a farm placement or vet surgery placement she wants?

I know the Ayrshire society have helped overseas students before.

I wonder if the BVA or SPVS could help. (British veterinary association and society for practicing veterinary surgeons). Or they may give her other ideas of where to try.

Frenchfancy · 28/02/2023 19:25

That's a good idea. Part of the difficulty is knowing where to try.

She has already da farm placement. This needs to be clinic or charity. I'm guessing the charities are overwhelmed with helpers.

The student room website might have some ideas. Otherwise, there are a couple of equine hospitals in Berkshire (racing area) she could try if interested in horses at all.

The best charity to try would be the PDSA, they have many clinics in the uk.

@Fbawtft You are a gem. Vetwings gave her lots of leads and she now has an offer for 2 weeks. As you suggested splitting it seems to make it easier to find places.

I love MN at times like these 😀
