I can't understand how you get double words

So if I leave a word and cross it with another, the other word has gone grey and I can't click on it

The letter where they cross has to be placed last. So for instance if you have
T - N with a space betweenand your next three letters are F,A,T, you place the F above the space, the T below and then the A last to get crossing TAN and FAT.
