I can’t seem to make crosswords work. They don’t go green.

And how are people getting words worth hundreds? I’m missing something.

They only go green if you cross at the last letter you put in to complete the words, not if they cross at a different point.

The very high scores occur if you can make a word (or a crossing pair) incorporating more than one of the orange starter letters, as each of these doubles the score. Better still if they're 6 letter words as they get a 20 point bonus

Yesterday's was thanks to a bonkers word fitting 3 of the orange starter letters - I'm assuming @thaegumathteth had the same one with a slightly better crossing word ...hence my comment upthread

Would one of the heavy hitters take a screenshot of their grid and post it so I can see how it should be done?

I’m usually good at word games but I can’t crack this. I find it I wait it out for a high-scoring word my grid gets clogged up, and the letters I need don’t turn up anyway!

You'd need to see it at each stage for it to make sense. And I often do have an oh-shit nearly clogged board. I usually have a couple of high scoring combos and then a mess of three letter words.
Before starting, I think about target words which could make use of the orange starter letters, trying to avoid uncommon ones unless they turn up in the first few trios, not all using the same letters, and ideally with a crossover on a common letter.
