Liz Truss and the £115k per annum

Does anybody know the latest on this? I've had a quick look online but can't see anything more recent than last year.

Can it be withdrawn from her? Has she given any indication that she will forego it?

It just seems to have fizzled out, but surely to god this idiotic woman cannot claim this?

There was some terrible wording on this in the media at the time, so it's not suprising people are confused - but ex PMs aren't given a £115k pension, or anything like it. They can claim up to £115k/year on expenses related to them having been a PM in the past, e.g. police protection on public visits, secretarial costs.

The data for all ex PMs is published each year - we will have to wait and see how much Liz Truss has claimed.

derbylass81 · 28/02/2023 10:34

Yes, I was reading that. It's for the expense of running an office or whatever. Either way, to be eligible you need to have been PM. And I cannot reconcile what she did as being in anyway deserving of anything.

She seems to have no understand of what a complete shitshow her 44 days were.

*understanding

People have no shame anymore, that's the problem. There was a time when a politician whose brief tenure who had been such a complete and unmitigated brief disaster would have taken to a life in the shadows burning with embarrassment forever more. Not so with smirky Liz. Of course it was the left wing media's fault that she's a moron. So she won't have any qualms about claiming all she can as an ex-PM.

Atrocious woman.

derbylass81 · 28/02/2023 10:53

@MurderAtTheBeautyPageant Yes, that's exactly what I've been thinking.

And yes, the smirking. She really does seem to have no shame or understanding.

@derbylass81 with the greatest of respect, I really think you need to give your head a wobble. She is entitled to claim for reimbursement of "out of pocket" expenses (i.e. money she's had to pay out for e.g. travel, accommodation, meals etc) in the fulfillment of her duties as ex-PM as required by the current government that she really has little choice about.

Millions of people work in jobs that necessitate a degree of independent travel and spending your own money at some point, which is then claimed back as expenses. It's no different here. Even though she's not the current PM, being an exPM can be a job for life to some degree.

derbylass81 · 28/02/2023 11:33

"being an exPM can be a job for life to some degree"

As regards her tenure of 44 days, 'with the greatest of respect', I disagree and I find the above comment ridiculous.

And I'd appreciate a degree of civility; I think your "give your head a wobble" comment was neither humorous nor necessary.

@oldwhyno but giving her an annual budget of over £100,000.00 Per annum for life? I’d like to see what expenses she considers unavoidable. Sure, a few trains back to 10 Downing Street to provide handover but… what else? And don’t say protection fgs. She really doesn’t need it.

oldwhyno · 28/02/2023 14:12

@PotKettel It's not a budget, it's a limit.

"I’d like to see what expenses she considers unavoidable."

When I claim expenses my employer has a say in what is appropriate. It will be the same.

"but… what else? And don’t say protection fgs. She really doesn’t need it."
generally "necessary office and secretarial costs". Protection is usually provided separately by the Met according to risk.

I agree with this. The trouble is our political system has historically relied on conventions to keep the wheels turning, but conventions only work if people abide by them, and to some extent that includes being shamed into abiding by them.

For what it's worth, I don't think this absence of shame, or the absence of taking any sort of responsibility, is limited to politics. It seems to be everywhere. People do not seem to be interested in anything beyond what is in their own best interests and jumping ship/passing the buck if it all goes to pot.

I bet she'll manage to claim up to the limit though.

What "ex-pm duties" will she have now that she is swanning around the world giving talks?

LlynTegid · 25/08/2023 11:55

I understand security, fair enough. Though for Boris Johnson it should be the security of a prison cell because of the charges he should be facing.

I don't think other expenses should be covered though.

Only if she incurs expenses up to the limit. "Payments are made only to meet the actual cost of continuing to fulfil public duties."

You'll be able to find out how much she claims when it's published. In the last couple of years only Major and Blair have claimed the full amounts.
