What can I get a new mum for £20-£30

TheBeautifulMoors · 28/02/2023 00:38

I did s collection for a new mum on our team, who is quite new and unfortunately have only raised £20. So i have a budget of £20-£30
What would be the best gift to spend this on?
I’ve looked on etsy and I like the personalised rainbow wooden puzzle sets

or this cutlery set

www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1315138326/custom-baby-feeding-set-5-pieceengraved

But i’m not convinced by either

Something for her or baby bowl or modern drink cup or sunhat or swim nappy. Just thinking of the things used every week but not essentials in draws already.
I love your monogramed feeding set idea!

Thank you! I might go with that one!
You’ve some good ideas.

Be careful of Etsy as some items on there don't meet safety standards even though they should, simply because small sellers may not be aware of standards on things like toys or children's clothing.

It's boring but maybe a Boots voucher? Or a smaller nappy cake would be about £30 and looks fancy while being practical.

A baby towel from jojo is nice

or go on Vinted and buy some BNWT things

One of the best presents I received (last year) was a frame set with paper and inkless ink to take little man's hand and footprints, was also room for a photo of him too

With that budget, my go-to present is usually a star wrap from Tuppence and Crumble. They’re a really lovely and useful present - and none of the friends I’ve bought them for have even seen them before, never mind it being a duplicate. They will send gift wrapped to the recipient in a nice bag. If you get a neutral colour, it could be used for future babies as well…

Boots vouchers

soleilblue · 28/02/2023 12:22

Buy something for mum. Chocolates. Things to grab and eat. Nice shower gel. Takeaway voucher.

Wooden puzzle will just gather dust until child is a bit older

Sharpbridge · 28/02/2023 12:39

The puzzle is pointless, she’ll be sleep deprived and muddled for years and the puzzle will get misplaced before the baby is big enough to use it.

Things I bought in the first few months after birth that I loved:

  • Baby manicure set in cute silver box. Sounds mad but baby nails grow fast and are tricky to cut, the tiny clippers were fabulous and the file stopped his nails scratching me while he fed.
  • A baby towel that also attached to me as an apron. This meant I could bend over bath, have both hands free to pick him up and yet not get wet and be able to wrap him in the towel instantly
  • Muslins in fun colours (because the baby burps up milk a lot and looking at white cloth with yellow stains is gross)
  • Toys by Lamaze, particularly the firefly. Babies love looking at these and chewing on them.
  • Breastfeeding tops.

No!! Everyone kept buying things for me but the only thing I was interested in or cared about was my baby. I wanted baby stuff not vouchers and chocolates.

Everyone gave me a bottle of prosecco. I didn’t drink for the next 3 yrs (breastfeeding and ttc) by which time it had all gone off.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 28/02/2023 12:43

A Chilly's cup to keep her tea/coffee warm when she has to go change a nappy etc.

BertieBotts · 28/02/2023 13:13

Lol agree about the wasted prosecco! I did eat chocolate though. Lots of it.

I never used the hand and foot cast kit we were given, I am about to car boot it. I'm quite glad TBH because the casts would have just ended up being clutter and I'm trying to get rid of things but you can't throw away something sentimental like that!

Agree that the Lamaze toys are great - we got handed down tons of these and they got used a lot. They are pricey and make a nice present.

The problem with babies is that the "what did you love" list and "what was a waste of money" list can have the same items on depending on who you speak to, and the absolute essentials are either boring presents or really expensive (plus so essential they will already have one!)

Flowers and a nice card to say congrats.

I was the opposite, I really loved it when friemds gave me chocolates, magazines and flowers. You can actually have a drink when breast feeding. I bought myself a big crate of stout as I needed the energy from it. My breast feeding nurse actually suggested it! I expressed for months. Baby stuff I appreciated was a baby towel with a hood, a baby bath, baby wash, muslin clothes, a lovely hand made blanket.

That's genius. I'll be using that for future baby gifts!

I've just Googled and they are really lovely.

blitzen · 28/02/2023 13:39

If you are looking for a gift for the mother, then this is lovely
www.lookfantastic.com/neal-s-yard-remedies-mothers-bath-oil-100ml/11926918

Also nice chocs or snacks would be good.

Agree with pp that the star wrap for baby is lovely, if you want something for baby. Otherwise maybe a nice jellycat bunny?

blitzen · 28/02/2023 13:40

Ah broken link, sorry. It was the neals yard mothers bath oil I am trying to link

Totalwasteofpaper · 28/02/2023 13:45

I second the star wrap from Tuppence and Crumble

Another suggestion is the Shnuggle Moonlight Night Light - It was one of the best things i was given and 3 of our other baby friends bought one after seeing ours.

please dont get personalised cutlery. Its a waste of time and the trend for personalisation is to prevent hand me downs and siblings sharing things.

rookiemere · 28/02/2023 13:46

Clarins hand cream is always a nice treat for new mums

Crimsonripple · 28/02/2023 13:47

Vote for a voucher. I received quite a sizeable John Lewis voucher which I put towards a baby carrier. A voucher means she can purchase what she likes whether that be for baby or her. Gifts are thoughtful but not often to your taste.

OrlandointheWilderness · 28/02/2023 13:56

I've got to stop reading this thread title as WHERE can I get a new mum for £20-£30!

That's what I read it as too. 🤣

another one for the Tuppence and Crumble wrap. I loved it that much I bought more in bigger sizes and am now using them for me second child.
