I want to quit diet coke...

Summerishere123 · 27/02/2023 18:51

Anyone done it? Any tips?
I don't drink tea and coffee. Not a huge fan of squash so my main drink is diet coke. I haven't had any today. I don't want to drink it anymore!

I also like Twining Peach and Orange tea

ElinorDashwood68 · 27/02/2023 19:50

I used to drink a couple of cans a day. Swapped for sparking water and now I'm not even keen on coke anymore. I'll have a fancy for a can a few times a year

How much coke go you drink that you get withdrawal symptoms? I have a can most nights instead of wine, but wouldn't feel any different without. There is Coca Cola Gold without caffeine.

Aqua libra and Highland spring both do really nice naturally flavoured sparkling water in a can, I have those in the house instead of 7up (my fizzy drink addiction). Could you try that?

Lilyjfree · 27/02/2023 19:59

Not coke, but Pepsi max. After my dentist warned me about the damage it had done to my teeth I decided to give it up, but I had to do it gradually. I was only drinking fizzy, so cut it down one can at a time. So first week I cut down by a can a day, next week cut out another (replacing with filtered water). Then a can every other day etc. Now I just have one can a week. The rest of the time I just drink water.

Emptycrackedcup · 27/02/2023 20:08

Just be careful as sparkling water can wreck your teeth (was drinking loads of this at one stage)

I've gone cold turkey since last Wednesday (start of Lent). I've had a few days of really craving one but it seems to be subsiding now. I'm hoping to stay off it for good if I can!

autumnboys · 27/02/2023 20:20

I was a huge fan of it but had to go cold turkey for a boring reason. Set a date, went cold turkey, felt crap for a week and then loads better. I had put the stiff ankles in the morning down to age but they went away. That was over a decade ago, don’t miss it at all.

Summerishere123 · 27/02/2023 20:21

Good luck! @yoshiblue

Go to caffeine free and limit to one can a day for a while, then stop

Firkinhavinalaugh · 27/02/2023 20:30

I stopped cold turkey about 6-7 years ago at NY. I don’t miss it now
I did have a “slip” up -‘I had a vital work event (events mgt) and had a stomach bug, I had one Coke/Zero. It was vile but it did the job for the evening event. So it served the purpose it was originally conceived for.

Robinsons more luxury cordials and sparkling water (we bought a soda stream)
kombucha
sparkling water alone
cbd water
love the pret cucumber seltzer
pellegrino drinks (but super sugary)y
big thing was stopping the aspartame (I can’t spell that 🤣) as I was having some tummy problems.

I didn’t lose it put in weight doing it!

good luck - I saved enough not buying it that we bought a brand new fridge!!!!!

Pruneit · 27/02/2023 20:33

It's hard but just do it. I had plain sparkling water instead.

boboshmobo · 27/02/2023 20:35

I gage up Pepsi max 6 months ago .
The dentist told me it was very bad for my teeth and I want to keep them . I only drink water now and espresso coffee .

I have lemonade if I go to a pub but it tastes soo sweet now !

Just2MoreSeasons · 27/02/2023 20:38

I used to have around 5 cans per day. Would worry about travelling abroad in case I couldn't get hold of the cans.
Went cold turkey after employing a hypnotist to help me stop. It only took one session. She got me to associate the look of it with 'bin juice' - the liquid you get at the bottom of a kitchen bin.
That was 4 years ago and I've never bought one since. I've had a sip of my sons though ... and found it tasted disgusting!
I had a headache for a few days too.

Itgoesalittlesomethinglikethis · 27/02/2023 20:40

I've recently done it paired with coffee abstinence. Weaned bit by bit. The strangest thing is getting pains in my legs during the night (this happened the last time I attempted to give up diet coke/coffee). I had to take paracetamol the first few days. Now I'm on reduced sugar ribena, just like my 3 year old. I drink more water evening/night. I want to work on upping the water.

Blankscreen · 27/02/2023 20:44

I'm a DC addict.

I love it out of a can. Don't like it out of plastic bottle.

I have a can at about 11:20 am whilst working but crave it from about 9:30 and often have another one about 4pm to see me through the evening.

I also don't drink tea or coffee and that seems to be a theme for quite a few of us on here. It's the caffeine I crave.

Interesting about the sweetener meaning I crave sugar. Is that true?

Maybe I go brave and go cold turkey.

MeganTheeScallion · 27/02/2023 20:48

@ichundich it creeps up on you, in my experience. I quit that and tea as soon as I found out I was pregnant and the caffeine withdrawal was worse than the morning sickness at first! I was so shocked. I had to go back to a can a day for a couple of weeks just to get through. Really made me think!

coolcahuna · 27/02/2023 21:03

2 years ago I cut ouf caffeine. Drink caffeine free coffee, the odd coffee occasionally. Also switched diet coke for caffeine free coke and hardly ever have that now. Drink squash or water.

Took about a week to feel normal, headaches were really bad. Went cold turkey which I read after is not the best way, better to cut down naturally.
