Changing from Cerazette (POP) to mirena coil- experiences please

Hi all. Posting here in the hope of more traffic.

I have been on the progesterone only mini pill, cerazette, for five years now. Due to constantly forgetting to take the darn pill, thinking peri menopause symtoms, etc I am seriously considering having a mirena coil fitted.

I was wondering if anyone could share their experience of going from mini pill to coil please? When I started the mini pill I had some side effects and bled for about a month straight before it settled down. Since then I had no periods at all but weirdly they started up again fairly regularly for a few months now.

hope you don’t mind me following for responses on this please.

other than TTC/ pregnancy I’ve been on combined pill since 17 and now 40 im
worrying my GP will say my days are
numbered on it and push for LARC

Hi @BlueThursday My reasoning for going on the mirena is that is can be used as part of the HRT treatment. So other than not having to remember the mini pill every day I hope I will get the other benefits from the coil. Im in my late 40s and realise that I have probably had peri menopausal symptoms for a while now. I just hope that changing from pill to coil is not going to kick start months of bleeding again.

I had a Mirena coil fitted 3 years ago (mid 40's) my only regret was not doing it earlier!! I'm also on HRT patches, work well together

I didn’t know that; that’s worthwhile thinking about.

maybe a silly question: can you/your partner feel it floating about? 🙈

I got the mirena after cerazette and it was fine.
If the strings are too long then can sometimes be felt during sex. They can get trimmed shorter if that happens

pistachioicecream · 27/02/2023 18:50

I'd be really interested in any experiences of this too.

Am also late 40's and been on Cerazette/desogestral for about 13 years. I had really heavy periods before and the mini-pill totally stopped them. I began having spotting and some not very nice peri-menopause symptoms, last summer so started HRT. Initially on patches and then changed to oestrogel in December (3 pumps). Also take continuous utrogestan (1 pill a day) and have continued on the mini pill.

This helped reduce some of the peri symptoms I was having but have now been bleeding for the whole of February.

I had an appointment today with a consultant for an internal ultrasound and biopsy connected to this. During that appointment she suggested I stop taking the pill and switch to the Mirena coil instead. But I'm really nervous about that as have heard some horror stories about the coil - particularly around it being fitted.

Would welcome any positive coil stories!

Morning all. Thanks for the replies. Sounds like there are a few of us in similar situations. Great to hear your positive experiences of switching over @dementedpixie and @hesaidshesaidtheysaid .
I am also very scared of the actual fitting @pistachioicecream but have read on the NHS website that you can get some form of local pain relief (other than taking painkillers before). I have an appointment on Friday and will certainly be asking about this.

@pistachioicecream and others this is something I found that gives some good information Coil fitting and pain relief

I haven’t read all the replies but you can have the mini pill for some of the progesterone part of the HRT in the same way you can use the coil. Both are progesterone. I am on the mini pill, utrogestan 100mg every night and oestrogel for HRT. (I am on the mini pill as I don’t want any bleeding / periods). It works well for me.

NoMoreLimbo · 28/02/2023 11:24

I think I may have heard of that combination @Xrays Glad that it is a good solution for you. To be honest I was considering that as an option BUT I keep forgetting to take pills, so adding yet more things to remember may not be the best option.

This is what I am doing @Xrays.

When I was on an evorel 50 patch, 100mg utrogestan and the mini-pill, it wasn't too bad. But having switched to Oestrogel (3 pumps) instead of the patch it all seems to have gone haywire.

Thanks for the link @NoMoreLimbo Will def have a read.

NoMoreLimbo · 28/02/2023 11:39

@pistachioicecream there seem to be a variety of possible pain relief for before the fitting so I think it is a matter of discussing this with the gp/nurse whoever does the pre appointment and then requesting this. I certainly will!

I know this is an older post but felt I needed to add, you cannot use the pop pill as part of the progesterone part of hrt

Yes you can. I have done it until 2 months ago. I was taking the mini pill, oestrogel 2 pumps and utrogestan 100mg every night. Newson Health and the NHS prescribed it - I was under specialists at both.

Cluxybear · 08/04/2024 13:02

The Utrogestan is the progesterone part of the hrt, the pop pill can be used alongside as a contraception but it does not form part of the hrt regime.

I don’t know why you’re intent on trying to argue with me. The pop is progesterone. It gives you part of the progesterone in HRT, which is why I only needed to take 100mg utrogestan every night instead of the standard 200mg. This was advised to me by two different specialists. I wanted to stay on the mini pill as I liked the fact I don’t have any bleeding on it and when I wanted to start HRT they said I could use it as part of the progesterone for HRT.

I’m not intent on arguing but you are giving out false information.
The standard dose for Utrogestan for the progesterone in hrt is either 100mg everyday or 200mg for 2 weeks. The pop pill cannot be used as the progesterone part of hrt. This I from the official websites like BMS, NICE and is even on Newson Health. Check out the videos/podcasts from Dr Louise Newson (founder consultant of Newsom Health and other specialists and the Balance App) who confirms this.

Hi I’m wondering if you made this switch in the end. ? I’m in the same position x
