Electric blankets keep dying

Are there any good ones out there? What am I doing wrong? We started the winter with 5 and I’ve had 4 dying on us. Different brands, in the £40ish price range. One may have been overused (DD kept it on to come home from school to a warm bed), but otherwise responsible use. Is it a known thing or are we vv unlucky.

Hi @LadyWithLapdog - we're sorry to hear you've not had a great experience with electric blankets so far. We’ve recently updated our best electric blanket page with loads of great options that have been tried and tested by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful, and please do let us know if you have any feedback Flowers

Our Dreamland one has lasted solidly. But I'm guessing you've tried that? Maybe a Costco brand instead?

Sewaccidentprone · 02/03/2023 10:48

Just unlucky. But the wiring inside is not that robust, so can gently fold to put away, but not scrunch up etc.

I’ve 2 - my oldest in approx 5 years old and can be a bit temperamental in turning itself off for no apparent reason, but as long I don’t move it, it works fine.

maybe you need to check the warranties on them as could be returned?

We've had 2 die on us recently as cables keep getting trapped in the frigging recliner 😭🤦‍♀️😭

EspeciallyDedicated · 02/03/2023 12:11

We've had one die too, its about 5 years old and had been scrumpled on the sofa a lot so probably just wear and tear.

Thanks for replying. It sounds like we’ve been v unlucky. Ours are between 2-4 months old. I will look for the receipts and see if we stand a chance to take them back. A couple were from M&S and I must have the email receipt. It’s annoying trying to save money on the heating and wasting it on electric blankets.

Would hot water bottles be a more practical solution for you?

Vlunken · 02/03/2023 18:42

Dreamland. Expensive but they've lasted years. It's worth buying the ones with timers so the kids don't accidentally leave them on.

Chippy1234 · 02/03/2023 18:43

I would definitely discourage anyone from leaving them on for hours on end just so that the bed is ready when they come in. I have a Lakeland one and it’s fab and heats up quickly within mins.

They are quite delicate but I wouldn’t be without them for slobbing in front of the TV and when I am working from home.

OriGanOver · 02/03/2023 18:52

Mine has lasted about 6 years so far. I can't remember the brand but something like slumberland 🤷‍♀️

Cherrysoup · 02/03/2023 19:01

All of mine have died on one side, mostly mine, probably because the wires break when I turn over. I’m overweight. It’s really annoying. Even the heated throw I had broke but Cosihome offered a full replacement and their customer service was immediate and amazing, really impressive. I currently have a Bauer throw.
