Is this an A&E visit?

Returned from a ski holiday a few hours ago - straight to bed and ready for a 8pm work start tomorrow.

I was crashed into by another skier mid way through the holiday and I skidded awkwardly, twisting my knee and (I think) overstretching my knee ligament. It hurt, a lot, but I was able to carry on. Between a knee support, RICE in the evenings and swallowing a lot of painkillers, I was able to continue skiing for the final 2 days.

I've driven home (5 hrs from airport) on it too (thankfully an automatic car) and fallen into bed.

I've been awake for last 2 hrs - knee is throbbing and I'm unable to even hobble to the loo. It's aching and I can't get back to sleep. Is this a visit to minor injuries in the morning? I have a job where I'm on my feet!

To add insult to injury, I've just had the most awful attack of proctalgia (otherwise known here on MN as Javelin Arse) so I'm feeling properly strung out.

Sounds like you've done yourself serious damage and carried on when injured instead of resting. I'd phone 111 and see what they see. Definitely needs to be seen, probably x-rayed and scanned.

WeAreTheHeroes · 27/02/2023 04:12

That was very unsympathetic sounding of me, sorry - if it's woken you and is throbbing you need to see a doctor. You can't even get to the loo so you're not going to be able to stand at work, even if you can get there. Your GP should be able to refer you to hospital to get it checked out. Sounds very painful. Have you tried ice or heat to soothe it tonight? If you go to A&E you're likely to be waiting several hours, but triage may be able to give something stronger for the pain. You need to find out what's actually going on so it can be appropriately treated.

I would go to a local walk-in centre, rather than A&E. Round here they have a nurse who specialises in sprains, ligament damage etc. They can also x-ray and give crutches etc. Still may take 4-5 hours at busy times, but usually half the wait time of A&E and more appropriate use of resources for this type of injury.

I did similar in France. Fell heavily during sport, twisted my knee badly and then carried on the activity. Travelled home two days later (10 hour journey) sat on a coach and by the time we got back i could barely get off the coach.

my knee had swollen to twice the size and I couldn’t bend my leg properly. Pain was horrid

saw the GP who said the prolonged immobility during the journey had caused fluid retention around the joint hence the swelling. He recommended RICE until the swelling had gone but at the same time To gently still use the knee to keep it from seizing up. Think sitting on a table so feet can’t touch ground and letting the foot swing back and forth to utilise the knee joint. It took a fair few days for the swelling to go down and for me to be able to start walking around. My knee however has never been right since and I still suffer every now again with some awful pain.

I think if you have a walk in clinic for minor injuries where you can get it assessed, xrayed, stronger pain relief if needed and more importantly a sick note as you won’t be able to work really id think that’s a perfectly acceptable place to go or Otherwise 111 or your GP.

I think I would… the pressurization in the plane and sitting probably didn’t help it at all. Also skiing on it… (would have done the same, btw.)

No it's a Gp visit

Orangetapemeasure · 27/02/2023 05:16

Yes it’s anA&E visit (a&e dr).

saltwater1985 · 27/02/2023 06:00

I'm currently triaging in A&E (it's the quiet time now!)
I'd send you to minor injuries (same building) for further assessment

No it's a Gp visit

What is a GP going to do, if you can even get an appointment? Send OP to A&E or minor injuries.

We have a minor injuries here but the last couple of times I've been they've sent me to A&E anyway. I'd probably just go straight to A&E with an injury that bad

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 27/02/2023 08:05

@Orangetapemeasure and @saltwater1985 say minor injuries/A&E and they should know. Hope it’s something they can sort for you.

No it's a Gp visit

It's not a GP visit. (Work in general practice).
This is why there are no appointments.

Not unsympathetic at all. Thank you for your advice!

I recently injured my knee. Couldn’t properly walk on it, lots of pain etc. Self referred for physio and got a much more thorough assessment, diagnosis and exercises than I would at A&E.

It doesn’t sound like an X Ray job and is not an emergency and you’d be better seeing a physio anyway so it’s a no from me.

BastardtheCat · 27/02/2023 21:32

I went to my usual minor injuries department and I'm now sporting a fabulous pair of crutches. The nurse I saw was a skier so he properly eyeballed me when I said that I'd carried on skiing on it but then admitted he'd done the same in the past. MCL strain and orders to RICE. Physio booked for next week. Throbbing now.

Thanks everyone.

Oww. Glad you got seen and they've given you some crutches. Take it easy, and I hope you are soon on the mend.
