Would you travel from Glasgow to Somerset over May bank holiday weekend?

I don’t live in the Uk any more so I don’t know what to expect from bank holiday traffic and transport.

Will be in Glasgow for a few weeks in spring and have the chance to attend something in somerset on Monday 1 May. All day event so would have to travel the day before and back the day after.

looks like I could drive, get the train, or fly to Bristol and drive/train from there.

is travel ok around bank holidays or best avoided? Would you do it and if so which mode of transport would be best (in terms of it being a holiday)?

I have no issue with any of the options in principle but I am wondering about disruptions/busy-ness.

there’s no other option for the event so it’s that day or never.

thanks

And whilst I’d like to attend the event, it’s would be a nice bonus and not absolutely essential

There's no railway station anywhere near Bristol Airport. Its miles outside the city. Your options are
Car hire.
Taxi
Bus/coach.

@MrsMoastyToasty thanks - I had seen online there was a shuttle from Bristol airport to the train station which could be an option.

However I haven’t looked in great detail yet around which mode of transport because I realised it was a bank holiday so wanted to get a gauge on whether it’s going to be a hassle to travel.

Under normal circumstances the coach shuttle from Bristol Airport to Temple Meads is fairly regular and decent but not sure how the bank holiday will affect things.

Flying will be much more reliable and probably cheaper than the trains, which are beyond flaky now in the north west (you'll probably be fine once you're south of Birmingham); you could drive but if you've been out of the UK a while be prepared for a shock as to just how bad the M6 and M5 are these days (we travel from the north west to Somerset pretty regularly and it has got worse and worse, especially the bits around Manchester, Birmingham and Bristol - maddest, riskiest driving is definitely around Manchester, if you do decide to drive, take the toll road for as much as you can).

It’s a long, long drive from Glasgow to Bristol. I travel between Glasgow to Gloucester a lot and it’s about 7-8 hours when you factor in the traffic once you get near Birmingham and bathroom breaks.

I definitely wouldn't drive. If you can fly and pick up a hire car at Bristol then possibly but look closely at price and duration of all options door to door. You could well be looking at hundreds of pounds for any option and that's just for transport - if you need to factor in accommodation too it will be even more.

Definitely fly and then car hire and prepare for the roads to be horrific.

I'd avoid it tbh for such a short time, it's not worth the hassle. You'll spend most of your time in traffic or travelling. It took dh 5 hours to drive from London to Birmingham once.

Thanks all - sounds like it will be more hassle than it’s worth (and yes re the likely cost; haven’t even looked at that side of things yet). I’m going to give it a miss.

The same event is happening in London later in the week but I’m certainly not up for traveling to London the day before the coronation!

Appreciate all your input.
