Can GP prescribe nappies?

Dc's nappies are constantly leaking. I've tried more brands and types than I can think to name. I have no idea what to do anymore.

I put sanitary pads in the nappies and they still leak.

Can the GP prescribe incontinence nappies?

DC is 4.5yo

Different trusts have different rules. Also depends on why dc need nappies aged 4.5. Where I have worked its not the remit of a gp but that of the continence service (which gp or hv will probably be able to refer you to). Where my friend lives she's been told that dla is to be used to fund this. You may be able to buy some more absorbant ones from a large chemist (or ask your hv if there's somewhere local that would supply them).

Andanotherone01 · 26/02/2023 15:08

Does your DC have additional needs? 4.5 years is very old to still be in nappies otherwise.

Slowsteps · 26/02/2023 15:10

You usually need a referral to a specialist service

Ah okay, so I could ask about the incontinence referral. We have OT, is it part of that?

Also in regards to chemists, what would I be looking for, tena style things for young children or are there specific brands?

Thank you for responding

What a rude and ignorant comment. It’s perfectly normal for a child of that age to still need nappies/pull ups overnight.

That isn’t usual for a kid without sn actually.

User... Not rude at all.

tappitytaptap · 26/02/2023 15:22

I best tell my trained since two in the day but still wet at night almost 7 and 4.5 year olds they are not 'normal' then....

You are wrong, just because you haven't experienced it doesn't make it unusual.

user49753267547005 · 26/02/2023 15:25

It is common.

Whether or not additional needs are involved is irrelevant. I asked about nappies not about the potty training age range

Are incontinence products for child different from the biggest regular nappy size or dry nights?

TomatoSandwiches · 26/02/2023 15:25

OP your OT will be able to refer you to the local incontinence team if your area has one.

Yes they can, usually additional pads, the incontinence team also have other advice and products that service users can access.

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/02/2023 15:27

Constant leaking at 4.5 The GP should be referring for investigation.

HV might also be able to help and advise. Probably easier / quicker to go via HV.

What are your credentials to make you an authority on this matter? It absolutely is very common for 4/5 year olds not to be dry at night, not just those with additional needs.

Bluekerfuffle · 26/02/2023 15:27

Have you tried the Drynites nappies, they have a 4-7 age range and 8-15 age range.

Well, I think the issue of whether or not there are additional needs is hugely relevant, because if there are any, you may have access to other resources and specialist help. Also, are the nappies for day or night use?

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/02/2023 15:28

OP is it just night time or general.

Kaffiene · 26/02/2023 15:29

Op you need to ask your OT, GP or HV to refer you to continence services or the bladder and bowel team. If they have started school then a referral to the school nursing team which is who takes over the Health Visitor.

if you haven’t come across it the ERIC website is a wealth of knowledge

Suzi888 · 26/02/2023 15:29

Do you have a waterproof mattress cover to protect the mattress…

Is the nappy/pant leaking because of movement or volume?

Smartiepants79 · 26/02/2023 15:29

It is unusual for a child of this age to still need nappies during the day. NOT unusual to need them at night. OP didn’t specify.
The reason why they need them could actually be very relevant as this will determine how likely it is to get them through prescription.
A child with SN may be entitled to nappies on prescription.
A child without any medical needs is very unlikely to have them prescribed I would have thought.

Also just to add ours is medical condition and we still don't get them.

That's so awful for you, it seems to be a bit of a post code lottery like with many other things.

user49753267547005 · 26/02/2023 15:41

Yeah I have tried the Dry Nites.

I don't know if they're leaking to due the volume but they can leak at any time. I've tried both pull ups and taped nappies in a lot of different brands.

I will ask GP/ OT for a referral to the incontinence team to see if they could help.

I have no issue with purchasing them myself, I just thought the GP may have access to ones that wouldn't leak so much.
