DD’s (ex) boyfriend is on the run!

Well on the run maybe a slight exaggeration but he’s crashed his car while (very probably)drunk and legged it. The police are definitely looking for him.

So they split up a few weeks ago, he’s been depressed since and went out drinking last night. Tried to drive home and crashed. Dd was driving this morning unaware of all of this and saw his car in a ditch with the police there so pulled over and told them it’s her boyfriends car. They say they have no idea where the driver is does she know. So she’s in the police car and rings his mate and has him on speaker phone when his mate says he doesn’t know where he is but that he’d been drinking heavily last night. So police are well aware he was probably over the limit and are trying to find him. Dd has been hysterical all morning Because she thought he was dead and his phone goes straight to voicemail. She’s since heard on the grapevine he’s ok but is keeping his head down for as long as possible.

I’m really hoping she doesn’t feel so guilty about this that she gets back with him. She’s sobbing saying it’s all her fault no matter how much I say he’s responsible for his own actions. No idea if he’ll get away with this when the police catch up with him, I assume if there’s no alcohol in his system then he probably will. Nobody else involved in the crash, he just came off the road. And yes, I’m very aware he could have killed someone/himself. He’s been so bloody stupid!

She's had a big shock, go easy on her. Of course all of this was his doing, but it doesn't sound like she is in the right state of mind to think it through.

No I know. I’ve told her not to make any rash decisions about their relationship while she is so shook up. I don’t want her getting back together with him due to guilt and then regretting it. I’ve also pointed out to her that drink driving is not a good character trait to have in a partner regardless of whether he gets away with it or not. Sad thing is that he genuinely seems like a nice guy so maybe he has just made a one off really stupid mistake.

Your poor DD. Of course she is going feel dreadful, and of course she is not responsible for his actions. I don't if the police can do him for drink driving as they can't prove he was at the wheel but he's shown what an utter idiot he is and I hope your DD doesn't feel guilted into taking him back.
