Would would you do? Work-related

I'm in middle management in public earning a good (ish) wage. I've been offered a role in a different organisation but it's dropping from 37 hours to 22.5 a week.

Pros

  • My work is horrendously stressful at the min with a recruitment freeze and severe shortages. I'm part of a restructure currently with my team changing but no redundancy. The new job would get me away from this.
  • The new job is in an area that I have an interest in
  • I have a long term health condition that I am medicated for every day. Its been worse over the last 6 months and I'm beginning to believe it's down to stress. It may be more manageable with less hours.
  • the role is more senior and I know some lovely people in the wider team

Cons:

  • Increased salary but reduced hours will mean I'm £250ish down a month (this will cover my bills but less money for savings/fun money/contingency when something breaks)
  • While I'm interested in the area, I have no experience so it'd be a learning curve
  • The commute will be 1 hr dooto door as opposed to 35 mins now.

I don't want how unhappy I am in my current job to push me to make a bad decision or to make excuses for myself.

Option 1: stay where I am until the dust settles on the new structure - it may be better

Option 2: take new job in interesting area but with less hours/pay

Option 3: keep looking

What would you do?

Op are you sure? Working 60 hours a week less and you’re only down 250 quid? That’s 4 quid or so an hour. Defo take the new job, it must be a big salary increase. But only if you are sure you can afford it, inc commute costs.

Treetopviews · 26/02/2023 14:20

Sorry 60 a month less.

Treetopviews · 26/02/2023 14:22

Also check you’ve the salary right, it doesn’t say pro rated in there, just as a safety check,

Whoops, yes you're very right @Treetopviews - typo, I'm down by about 550 a month

I'd definitely take it if it was only 250 down haha

I'm swaying towards option 3. Don't jump the gun at the first thing that comes along.

I do see how a change would be beneficial to you though when you list the pros.

Fwiw I've just moved from a job in private sector where I was working at least 60 hours a week and stressed to the point of it affecting me physically and mentally.

I'm now working 35 hours a week for a not for profit organisation for more money and almost zero stress and I love it.

There is something else out there that's right for you even if option 2 isn't that something.

Consideringit · 26/02/2023 14:33

Thank you.

I agree, while my contract says 37 hours, I haven't worked less than 50 in the last 18 months looking at my timesheets.

I do wonder whether I'd end up doing the same if I was part time.

Stay put for now

Option 2 plus 3? Take new job but the reduced hours will make it easier to find something else?
