Hysterical baby HELP please

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 25/02/2023 18:50

Baby is 4 mos, has been crying like she’s in pain on and off all day. Seems like it’s getting worse. She opened her bowels a bit and that seemed to help but now hysterical again. Usually a very happy baby.

no fevers or vomiting. Should I take her to A&E? The queue for 111 is over an hour, posting here whilst I wait…

Teething?
If you baby is acting like they are in pain, they could well be. Have you given calpol?

Imperfect10 · 25/02/2023 18:54

trust your instinct.
It's unusual and shhe's distressed it sounds like you need to see someone

If she gets better on the way there or 20 seconds before you are seen you can rest assured that we've all been there!

BooCrew · 25/02/2023 18:56

Do your instincts tell you something is wrong? If so it probably is and you should get her seen. When mine was tiny I took him to the GP because he 'just wasn't right' and he ended up in hospital.

Have you checked for a hair tight around her fingers or toes?

Thank you, yes we’ve undressed her and checked nothing tight. Fresh nappy. No rashes. Gave calpol in case it is teeth but doesn’t seem to have made a difference. Took a bit of breast milk via spoon. Has just fallen asleep in DH’s arms.
when we lay her down again, she screams like she’s in pain, I am wondering if it’s an ear infection? We have all had a bit of the lurgy this past week.

She also hasn’t slept well today perhaps she is overtired. If she doesn’t sleep well now (normal bedtime) I may just take her in, her cry is distressed like when she has her jabs.

BrokenLink · 25/02/2023 19:31

As a rule, a baby who is taking less than half of their normal feed volume needs to be checked by a doctor.

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 25/02/2023 19:35

@BrokenLink thsnks, no idea how much she has taken in, she breastffeeds? Has had wet nappies but they’re not soaked as usual. Spoon fed her pumped milk after her pop and she was quite happy to have that.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 25/02/2023 19:37

Have you done nurofen as well?

I would try and get her to sleep in case she is overtired and then see how she is when she wakes up

MrsWhites · 25/02/2023 19:46

I think if a baby cries an abnormal (for them) cry for more than a few hours and calpol hasn’t helped, isn’t taking normal feeds etc I’d ring 111. Even if nothing is wrong, you’ll have peace of mind and no one with any decency would complain about a worried mother bringing in a very young baby!

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 25/02/2023 19:55

Thankyou. I just know they’re run off their feet at A&E and if we end up there for a few hours with not answer she’ll just blow more overtired.

she slept for 30 min and now is happily nursing half asleep so hopefully whatever it was has passed.

Ear infection! When our dd was small this happened to us & it turned out to be a bad ear infection. Ring your out of hours doctor for advice

RosaBonheur · 25/02/2023 20:10

Sleeping in your arms but crying every time they lie flat on their backs is a sign of an ear infection. I'd keep an eye on her for a fever and try to see a GP as soon as possible.

Oopswediditagain2023 · 25/02/2023 21:14

Has she had a warm bath? If it's when she's on her back it could be bad tummy and a bath can get things going. I would presume teething as well which can give bad tummy aches.

DancingDaughter50 · 25/02/2023 22:28

Op hopefully she's settled but never ever ever ever feel bad for taking a baby to be checked out.
We've had emergencies where dd was raced through a packed a and e with floppy babies and we've had times where it wasn't urgent. They always reassured me to never feel bad for being overly cautious with children.

Babies can go downhill so fast but also bounce back really quickly!

But please never let anyone make you ever feel like a time waster for babies and a and e.

Pinkbananas01 · 25/02/2023 22:33

What do your instincts say? If you feel something is wrong take them to be checked out.
Never ignore a parents instincts because they are almost always correct - best advise given by my old medical prof many moons ago

Username24680 · 25/02/2023 22:41

Completely agree with others - please never feel like you’re overreacting or anything when they’re that young 😊 always better safe than sorry if you’re unsure.

Similar crying to what you describe happened with my DS a few times (like yours, usually not a crier!) and it usually turned out that he was gassy and was struggling to pass wind. When he’d lay on us and sleep he’d be on his tummy which must have been more comfortable for him than being on his back in his crib. Just wondering if it could be something similar as she had some comfort after emptying her bowel. You could try bicycle legs for a little bit and see how she gets on.

I hope your DD is back to her usual self soon and you all manage to get some rest ❤️

DancingDaughter50 · 26/02/2023 15:53

@waitingwaitingwaiting2.. How is baby today op?

Redebs · 26/02/2023 16:22

Glad she's more comfortable now.
Was she breastfeeding normally before it happened? Sometimes babies can get tummy ache if they don't have a full length feed.

The first minutes of a feed (fore milk) are higher in natural sugars, like a snack. After a little while the richer milk comes through (hind milk) to fully nourish and satisfy them.

If you got interrupted in feeding, or swapped breasts during a feed, she might have gotten a higher sugar feed, which can lead to wind and loose stools.

Some mothers say that foods that they eat themselves can cause baby colic through the milk, but I don't think that's been proven.

If it happens again, try to settle down together for a long feed and then maybe walk her round a bit. She isn't crying to annoy you or control you, so give her what works to make her better.

Signs that you need to see Doctor would be high temperature, excessive floppiness, change in skin colour or change in tone of cry. High, weak, wailing that can't be solved by breastfeeding is serious, but if suckling works to settle a strong cry, then it's likely to be something that will pass.

Boogismyname · 26/02/2023 16:24

Has the babe got a hair tied around her toe or finger cutting off circulation?
I remember someone I know having that problem when babe was historical.

Boogismyname · 26/02/2023 16:25

Hysterical obviously

Billydaffodil · 26/02/2023 16:34

Skin on skin sometimes helped ours when like this. It's so hard, hope she's ok now. Flowers

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 26/02/2023 23:04

Thank you for all of the support and suggestions. Apologies, I fell asleep when DD did and didn’t update the thread. All is well.

She woke after 30 mins for another feed and then slept for four hours. Woke grunting and grizzly, nursed a bit and then passed a massive amount of wind and had a poo, a bit liquid and mucus. Changed her nappy, nursed again and more massive wind and watery poo. She slept another four hours and did the same wind/poo routine. Back to her happy self today, though I am giving her Infacol Every couple of hours and being persistent with burps.

We have all been unwell so I reckon she’s had a touch of whatever we had but more in her tummy. Shed been having loose stools for a couple of days so this sort of constipation was a surprise to us. So relieved to have my happy smiling girl back today.

Thank goodness! It's such a worry and strain when they are ill.

Username24680 · 26/02/2023 23:44

@waitingwaitingwaiting2 Glad to hear she’s back to herself today 😊 and that you all managed to get some rest!
It’s always such a worry when they can’t just tell you what’s wrong, isn’t it?!
