Weekend in Bath ideas

QuestionsFromThePublic · 25/02/2023 15:38

Any ideas for a group of 9 women taking a trip to Bath in early Sept.

We have accomodation sorted.

Any ideas for things to do any see? Places to eat? Lots of ages and budgets to consider.

Many thanks

The Roman Baths are fascinating and definitely worth a visit. The Thermae Spa has a rooftop pool which has great views.

I'd also highly recommend the Jane Austen centre if there are fans of hers in the group.

Bath is a great place to visit, I hope you have a wonderful time!

Can recommend the Real Italian Pizza Co, Bertinet Bakery & the Fine Cheese Co. Love the Thermae Spa. The open top bus is a great way to see the city.

I grew up in Bath and only moved out of the city 2 years ago (I'm 37) so know it quite well!

There is the Thermae Bath Spa which has a rooftop pool - it is quite expensive (something like £19pp for an hour) but they do offers in the evening I think for groups with prosecco etc.

In early September you may still have some warm weather so if you wanted something cheap to do you could go for a picnic in the park by the Royal Crescent where you could take in some of the architecture - it's only a 15 minute walk from town up a not too steep hill and would mean you could see both The Circus and The Royal Crescent on the way. There is also a nice pub called The Marlborough Tavern where you could eat/have a drink.

Food wise there is loads but I'd recommend Beckford Bottle Shop or Corkage which both do small plates and wine by the glass so people can order as much or as little as they want. For a treat/more expensive meal Hudson Steakhouse is amazing!

To be honest Bath City centre is pretty small and flat so assuming everyone is in at least average health you could walk around and catch most of the sights (Bath Abbey, The Circus, The Royal Crescent) without having to pay. There is a sightseeing bus if people can't/don't want to walk.

For more "touristy" things you could go to the Roman Baths. The Pump Rooms I think is overpriced for what it is (essentially a cafe attached the The Roman Baths) and there are a lot of cheaper/nicer ones including Sally Lunns which is down a lovely cobbled street by the Abbey courtyard and you can buy the compulsory "bath bundle."

If it were me though and the weather was nice I'd just go for a slow meander through the city calling in at cafes/bars (depending on which way you're inclined!) or one of the many parks in town (Parade Gardens is lovely by the river and adjacent to Pulteney Bridge and the weir which are both very picturesque!)

Bath Bun not bundle!

You can take a boat trip up the river past a few pubs. ..did that for a hen party a long time ago.

Also paddle boarding - definitely a place near by that does paddle boarding. The American Museum has lovely grounds and a good tea room. Afternoon tea in Bath is quite a tradition.

Afternoon tea at The Pump Rooms?

Welshgirl10 · 25/02/2023 16:40

There is a virtual darts place that has opened which also has beer pong tables you can hire (and axe throwing if that is your thing!)

FrenchandSaunders · 25/02/2023 16:41

I had a girly weekend there last year. The restaurant called 8 was superb. I’d def recommend. And afternoon tea at the pump house.

FrenchandSaunders · 25/02/2023 16:42

The Roman baths was good but full of canoodling coupes when we went.

Heavensalongwayaway · 25/02/2023 16:45

Me and my sister go every year for a break to catch up. I recommend the open top bus, the assembly rooms and the baths.

You must do the Bizarre Bath comedy walk - it is hysterical, cheap and on most evenings.
If you pop up to Sydney Gardens the Holburne Museum frequently has brilliant exhibitions on.
Menu Gordon Jones is our favourite restaurant.

We went to bath aqua glass studio to blow a bauble. I recomend chia walla on Monmouth St for street food; the wraps are lovely.
Treasure trails may do a treasure hunt for Bath too.

No 1 Royal Crescent is a very interesting interactive museum to walk around. Recreates life in one of the crescent houses during Georgian times.

We did gin cocktail making - was one of the best afternoons ever! Think it was the Canary Gin Bar?

I've sent a message to Thermae Baths about price and availability. Their website is rubbish.

I've searched and followed as many as possible suggestions made here on IG.

Thanks so much

Had a lovely weekend there with a friend recently!

  1. The Roman Baths blew my mind. Audio guide highly recommenden. Happy we booked a slot to go late-ish in the day (roughly two hours before closing) because they turn on the fire torch-thingies and it's so pretty. We browsed separately and I did the audio guide-thingy - incredible, highly recommend it if you are into history even a little bit. Noticed many people who didn't use the audio guide, they just looked a bit lost, whereas people listening to their devices were awestruck.
  2. The Fashion Museum is world class. Seems to be temporarily closed though. Again it blew our minds. Never seen such well preserved beautiful frocks that are so old. Upstairs ballrooms also v pretty to peak into, all the staff really lovely, will answer any question. There's a great Waitrose and a good M&S and we treated ourselves with goodies from there. Also an amazing gastropub whose name escapes me, couldn't get a reservation and kicking myself. Plenty of beautiful little independent shops. A good theatre and comedy club, check what's on. I want to go back now! Have a lovely time.

Go to the beautifully renovated Cleveland pools. Outdoor swimming in 1930s chic

Dumb question but do you swim at the Roman baths?
