Ha - our late dachshund was brilliant at reversing, especially if he'd asked to go outside but discovered it was raining when I opened the door. As with terriers, any dog liable to go down a burrow has to be able to reverse!

I read that book review linked to upthread, didn't find it very convincing. Sure, we don't know what's going on in any other creatures self, but the congruence between the demeanour of a dog and the particular situation strongly suggests it maps to 'emotion'.

Tell that to our daughters dog who when seeing us for the first time in 3 years, due to covid, was soooo excited she weeeee'd all over my feet🥴
