What should I do for a living?

I know you can't tell me really, but can you indulge me by firing ideas at me?

I'm a sahm ATM and have been doing part time jobs here and there around DCs for the past 7 years.

Background is very varied. I've done things like hospitality, HR Admin, PA, LSA in a secondary school and a TA in a primary. All my life I wanted to teach, but having some classroom experience under my belt now, I have have realised it most likely isn't for me (definitely not primary anyway).

I've been applying for some jobs with educational charities and the like, but getting nowhere so far.

ATM money isn't a big issue, but in the future I would like to be able to pay my way. We have been v focussed on DH career since we left uni and have moved around a lot, so I've had to take what I could get in terms of work, so while I paid half in the beginning, his salary is now way more than I'm ever likely to earn, so I don't contribute financially at all really. I'm not saying I want a job like his, but I'd like to be a bit more useful

School administration / admissions?

aurevoir · 25/02/2023 15:45

If you wanted flexibility you could set up your own business as a virtual PA.

MyLittlePonyWellies · 25/02/2023 15:57

Thank you. I will look into both options

Do you live near a university? You could try their website for admin jobs or look on jobs.ac.uk.

MyLittlePonyWellies · 25/02/2023 16:02

Yes, there's quite a big uni in a neighbouring town. I will take a look there. Admin in their MFL department or something on the pastoral side might suit me. Thank you for that

Working in schools? I'm HR in a school, and it might work well with your background.

ChocolateHelps · 25/02/2023 17:48

Not what you're asking, but are you paying into your own personal pension? You can pay in £2880 and get 25% topped up by government even when you're earnings are £0. Tax efficient for the family and good for you to have your own pension. Vanguard SIPP is low cost and easy to access. Wish I'd known this when I was SAHM

Work wise - if money isn't an issue - can you start your own business? It could grow as your children grow

MyLittlePonyWellies · 25/02/2023 18:56

Thanks @ChocolateHelps

I do need to look at my pensions and think about consolidating them and paying more in. I didn't know that re government top ups, so that's really helpful.

Starting my own business sounds great and I've thought about this...but then just couldn't think of any business ideas. I'm clearly talentless 🤣. Possibly TEFL online or something or online PA as someone suggested^^

I've applied to a few roles just now (one at the uni nearby and two at schools - not classroom based as I don't want to do that again)

Just an update to say that I've just been offered one of the jobs I applied to after this thread 🥳. It sounds pretty perfect and I'm thrilled.

Wanted to update and say thanks again 💐
