How much on average does your 5yo petrol car cost to service?

Looking to get a new (used) car and weighing up options.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me how much on average their not that old (under 6yrs) petrol car costs to service - including any incidental work needed each year to get through MOT etc?

I currently have a very old diesel which costs so much it's no longer economical (not to mention major faults so it's on its last legs anyway)

I budgeted £50 a month for service, tyres mot and odd bits like wiper blades. Full Service for a golf is about £350 from a main dealer and will be cheaper at a local garage. Also got a scrape Fixed from this fund too. It's £600 a year.
I had two tyres go with nails In one week (the brand new one). Interim service is much cheaper.

Also get quotes from differ main dealership garage as they will often beat a written quotation.

2013 Honda Civic 1.8 is either £150 ish or £250 depending on a minor or main service, you’re supposed to
alternate. That was at an indie Honda specialist not a dealer. It’s on 75k.

Breezed through 4 mots now, not a single fault. Have just changed tyres though, got decent ones and that was around £350. Expecting brakes might need looking at soon though.

That's certainly far cheaper than my current costs.

If you avoid main dealer it'll be cheaper.
I have a 16 year old petrol and rarely need any work. In 8 years having it. It's only needed tyres and water pump.

Service and MOT ourselves.

Grumpybutfunny · 25/02/2023 13:40

It depends on the car we have BMW and Minis and the service isn't yearly it has a count down timer thing and tells you things that need doing at a set time so you get them done. Overall service is every two years now (30k miles gap between services after the 1st at 15k). We avoid main dealers for the count down parts as they for example wanted 1.5k for breaks yet DH did it for £800 in parts.

Just got my 4yr old petrol car serviced today at the dealership at a cost of £420.00. Ouch!

Honeyroar · 25/02/2023 13:59

Avoid main dealerships if you can. Husband is a mechanic and worked in some. He said there were time limits on jobs, so things got rushed, plus targets to meet. He now has his own garage and jobs are done well, not rushed

CatOnTheChair · 25/02/2023 14:04

Just got my 18 plate Civic serviced and MOT'd with a local, independent, guy. £154.
Will need 2 new tyres before it next goes in.

The time before, at a dealer, it was more like the 450 mentioned above. It was so much, I went elsewhere, but can't remember exactly how much.

WhoHidTheCoffee · 25/02/2023 14:06

We have a 2016 plate Seat Ibiza. Actual service cost plus MOT is around or just under £250, before any additional work required is taken into consideration..

WhoHidTheCoffee · 25/02/2023 14:07

Should have said that’s with a local independent garage. And definitely worth shopping around - we had to get the front brake discs and pads replaced recently and paid £200. Would have been £330 through a national garage in town.

Cupcakequeen75 · 25/02/2023 14:14

Don't forget that 5yr could well be cambelt time (if fitted with one).
On my Polo it was very reasonable (independent VW specialist).
On some cars it can be a very expensive job and if ignored (to save money) can wreck the engine if it fails.

89ghud · 25/02/2023 14:15

Brand of car will have an impact. We have Ford which has cheaper easy to obtain parts, a proper Ford full service is about £350 but one in a local garage is about £200. A Merc or BMW official service would cost a lot more I assume.

89ghud · 25/02/2023 14:16

We save about £150 a month for 2 cars which covers service, MOT and tyres. DH's car is high maintenance (expensive tyres etc). I've upped it as the cars got older, they're 7-8 years old now.

IncessantNameChanger · 25/02/2023 14:19

Full dealer service under £400. The only fails on the mot are tyres, brakes and an exhaust joint. My car is very reliable. It just over 6 years old now. Apart from a leak onto the clutch it's never ever gone wrong once

ilovesooty · 25/02/2023 14:21

My 2018 Peugeot is due to be serviced with MOT at my local garage. £116.

Rollercoaster1920 · 25/02/2023 14:24

Vauxhall petrol are about 260 major and 160 minor, swapping every year. Parts prices are cheaper than VW in my experience too. Tyres ordered online from Kwik fit are 90 each incl fitting and disposal.

MargaretThursday · 25/02/2023 14:27

We have a lovely independent chap who gets the car ready for MOT/service and takes it when it's ready. He enjoys doing it, so I suspect strongly he doesn't charge as much as he should.
But we've never had a service including parts over £200 in the 9 years we've had this car.
We've had occasional things, like exhaust repair, which he doesn't do which can be more expensive. And the local garage is still grovelling after failing to do a screw tight enough on our oil tank and it went all over the drive, so they're being very nice currently. Grin

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 25/02/2023 14:30

Oil service (aka the big one) one my BMW 1 series was £400. Brake fluid about £100. Both at main dealer. But like other posters, it's all on a countdown on these cars. I always hit the time limit rather than mileage as I don't drive moon miles 🤣

Caramac555 · 25/02/2023 14:30

4 year service on a mazda 2, took it to a main dealer as recall work needed too.

The recall work was free, the service was 435. Next time it's going to the garage in the village for generic pampering.

Ariela · 25/02/2023 14:32

DD has a petrol car, it's now 6 or 7 years old. She changes the oil and oil and air filters herself. Tops up coolant and windscreen washers. Checks the tyres for wear, and the tyre pressure, and looks at the brakes, checks all the lightbulbs are working and inspects all the wipers replacing if necessary. She inspects the brake lines and checks there are no leaks off the engine. If it needed brakes doing she might pop it in a garage, likewise if the belts need changing she would put it in the garage ONLY for that job. Then she thoroughly washes the car inside and out and underneath (it's polite to do this), before taking for MOT.
Costs less than £100 including oil, obviously more if it is a garage job, but all of the above is easy to do yourself with basic tools, and saves a lot of the ££.

We've never had a car fail MOT other than this car - at the last 'free' service as part of the warranty they insisted it needed new brake pads, however shee asked for the old ones back and sadly that garage will not be getting further business for her as the brakes had plenty of wear left (barely worn as car was only 3 years old and it had just done 10k miles, sadly she wasn't savvy enough to question it).

Rebel2 · 25/02/2023 14:36

I pay £125 for a full service and £40 MOT
2014 VW polo petrol

CashMeOutside · 25/02/2023 17:21

I don't have a 5yr old petrol but as these aren't what's taken into account, I'll answer.

My service interval is 18k/24 months but i ensure oil is changed every 10k and then the next service (10k later) is a big one. Typically this means every year. I make sure this is about 6 months after the mot so things get caught.

Small service/oil change only is £150
Big service is £250
