Help me out with the rough cost of carpet

Need to get carpets fitted but have never done this before and have absolutely no idea what to expect in terms of cost. Small semi 3 bed, carpet needed in living room, hallway, stairs and 2 double bedrooms. I know this is very vague but just need a rough idea - are we talking £1.5k or £4k?

Measure up the rooms and you can work out a rough price on a cost per meter squared, cheapest is about £15 for something basic, last carpet I bought we paid about £28.

redpinkyellow · 25/02/2023 08:31

Don't forget to factor in underlay if you think you might need this

Can2022getanyworse · 25/02/2023 08:35

Simple maths.

Room is 4m x 4m = 16m Square, multiply by cost per metre of carpet, say £15, that's £240.

Then add underlay, fitting, gripper, maybe £500.

Do the same for each floor space.

Around £30 metre will buy you a fairly decent carpet for downstairs and hall/stairs, bedrooms you could go cheaper, do you need underlay/gripper as well. Some places have offers on fitting if you buy from them

Gjallerhorn · 25/02/2023 08:37

I had a new carpet last year for my sitting room, it was £700. Just measure your rooms and then look online for the sort of stuff you want. Becuse it’s done by measurement no one can really be sure. Really cheap carpet doesn’t last.

Ridingthegravytrain · 25/02/2023 08:40

Also don't forget carpets come in rolls of fixed sizes so you pay a bit more than the exact measurement of your room. If you're lucky the stairs and hall can split a roll

Piffpaffpoff · 25/02/2023 08:44

I just got the whole house apart from the bedrooms done. We were about £40 per sq m for good quality carpet and underlay. The best recommendation I could give you is to use a good local company - Tapi quoted about 1.6x what we paid from the local company, and that was in their ‘sale’!

catfunk · 25/02/2023 08:45

Don't forget you need a decent quality underlay too.

MaeMair · 25/02/2023 08:45

You get carpet places that do ends of rolls, where u can get high quality carpet for v good prices. If youre ok to have not all the one carpet throughout. Round here these places are in the edgier parts of town but they are often family businesses and can do the measuring, fitting etc all in one for much cheaper than the big stores. Have done this several times myself.

SushiSuave · 25/02/2023 09:23

Thanks for the replies. Need underlay and grippers.
What is the rough cost of fitting? I can't get in and measure my rooms yet as it's a new build but will be able to do the maths on that when I can measure. It's the "hidden" costs that worry me such as the fitting.

I've just had a new living room carpet fitted. Though i went for much cheaper stuff than the other commenters. Living room doubles as a playroom for my 2 under 4 so not much point in spending a lot.

5x4.5 plus 25m2 underlay and grippers came to 230. Fitting was booked separately for 50 quid. This is ordering online and a local fitter (North east).

Mindymomo · 25/02/2023 09:34

There shouldn’t be any other hidden costs. You can get different grades of underlay, don’t feel you have to go with the most expensive, same with carpet, if you are wanting carpet to last a long time, then a 50/50 or 80/20 carpet will last a long time, but obviously more expensive. Grippers should be included in cost of fittings, but you will also need door strips, again these can be cheap or expensive ones. A decent couple of carpet fitters should be made to do whole house in a day (I worked for a carpet contractor and our fitters would be able to do this).

Badbudgeter · 25/02/2023 09:35

I’d Google independent carpet places local to you. Often they will sell, deliver and fit for one price or they will have someone who does if for a decent rate.

As a random comment it’s a good idea to consider the gap between floor and door. I’ve replaced a cheap foam backed carpet with a thicker one with underlay and then had to shell out to get someone to skim the bottom off a door.

gallina · 25/02/2023 09:37

I've just had carpet fitted to my stairs, landing and two of the bedrooms (one single and one double) including underlay grippers and door plate things. £1600

Wishimaywishimight · 25/02/2023 09:45

I'm getting stairs, landing and 2 double bedrooms - total cost, including pulling up laminate floors in the bedrooms, underlay and fitting is €3,020.

Isheabastard · 25/02/2023 09:52

I recently had my stairs and landing done by Wilton Carpets. I bought their cheapest carpet at about £11.99 per metre. They allowed me to buy my underlay online - much much cheaper. Good underlay can make a big difference.

Thequotes from Tapis and Carpetright were much higher. Most companies employ a fitter that you pay direct.

Wool carpets generally spring back from furniture imprints whereas nylon/polypropylene is easier to clean. An 80/20 carpet is often considered to give you the best of both.

Make sure you ask for an itemised quote, there should not be any admin charges included, that’s just padding.

Look for independents shops as well. But I was surprised once when a local basic shop turned out more expensive than a really nice retail shop in the posh town next door.

aurevoir · 25/02/2023 10:16

We did a 2 bed semi a few years ago for £2k, including underlay.

It'll depend on how nice you want the carpet to be! As a side issue, I'd 100% recommend getting carpet that's bleach clean. Had quite a few spills and it's been fantastic.

Defo go for independent company rather than a big chain. Some companies will offer free fitting.

SushiSuave · 25/02/2023 10:20

Oooh I'm nervous to find out the total price!!! Have found a local carpet outlet with excellent reviews and free measuring and quote so thanks for the advice!

I'd have a wonder through your local high street and take some rough measurements into independent places rather than chain. I did this when I moved into my new house and for stairs, landing, living room and 2 bedrooms it was about £1500, they are all decent sized rooms except the box bedroom and the carpets are good quality, I could have got it cheaper if I had picked cheaper carpets. That was with underlay, grippers and fitting included in North West.
I gave them my measurements and they gave estimates for different carpets I liked and then knocked a percentage off the total price because it was a few rooms.

PauliesWalnuts · 25/02/2023 10:28

If you’re on a budget I’d recommend a mid range carpet and top range underlay - especially if you have dodgy old floorboards underneath. I’m having my living room done in a couple of months partly because the friction of traffic against 170 year old floorboards has made the underlay completely disintegrate. I had to sweep half of it up!

LBOCS2 · 25/02/2023 10:34

I was going to say the same as @PauliesWalnuts. Really good underlay is about £6/sqm, whereas you can easily spend £40/sqm on carpet. Having decent underlay very much increases the quality that carpet feels. You can buy it online cheaper than most shops will supply it for.

QueenMabs · 25/02/2023 10:48

My stairs and large landing was £1300 for a hardwearjng wool carpet and underlay.

The medium sized bedrooms were around £300 each with underlay for a cheaper carpet.

Including fitting.

clpsmum · 25/02/2023 11:15

I was two grand for two double bedrooms a box room and landing and stairs

Garrie · 25/02/2023 19:41

About 3k I would think.
