Council housing

stressedoutstudent · 24/02/2023 18:54

After a 5.5 year wait on the list following the breakdown of my marriage, i have been offered a council house. In the mean time i have been privately renting, which has been mostly funded by Universal Credit top ups to my wages previously, more recently, student loans as im a student nurse. Ive had bad luck with private renting, my first the landlords marriage also broke down and she required it bac, the second the landlord passed away and the family sold the house, so we are in the 3rd house in 5 years. Secure housing is my wish for my children. Im a single mum to 3 teenagers, and as they get closer and closer to adult hood, affording my rent has been a constant source of worry. I didnt want them to finish school and immediately be responsible to contributing to the house, and nor could i on nurses pay, afford the rent in the local area alone. A council house until i can afford my own home again is a godsend. I am extremely grateful for the offer. This reduction in rent and security will be life changing for us.

However, council houses come without carpets, my rented property includes white goods, my furniture isnt all suitable for the new place (ie. my children currently have cheap double beds, these wont fit into new bedrooms), and my sofa is too large for the new property. I have been offered a decoration grant, and whilst that is appreciated, the colour of the walls makes no difference to me in the immediate future. A safe secure affordable home is the priority. But i need to cook, and wash clothing.

I have a microwave, and an airfryer in the mean time, but i need to source these items.

Ive checked facebook marketplace, ebay, and preloved. Can anyone suggest anywhere else i can search for these items, so i can give my children a home they can bring friends to and enjoy and know it is there safe place for as long as they need it?

There’s lots of grants and funding - www.rcn.org.uk/Get-Help/Member-support-services/Financial-wellbeing/Charitable-funding-and-other-help

there’s also Council welfare funds you can try and apply for

GoodChat · 24/02/2023 18:57

Our local area has a Freebies Facebook page where people donate all kinds of really generous items that are no longer required.
There are really regularly sofas etc offered.

There's also a charity that sells furniture at really affordable prices (like a tenner for a coffee table) so it's worth seeing if there's anything similar where you are.

I guess your children are probably too old for you to have a health visitor but it might be worth speaking to the school to see if they're aware of local support services.

Most Councils have a 'furniture scheme' or such like, or can refer you to one. These are donated items, are are intended for those in circumstances such as yourself. The gateway to these schemes is usually the housing department....ask your local council housing department.

Depending on your council they will have a page that links to charities that can offer grants.

for carpets I put it on a credit card and paid it off bit by bit so I could have carpet laid before we moved any furniture in

LadyMcLadyface · 24/02/2023 19:11

If you post a request in a local FB group some people may offer to donate things they don't need anymore, I've seen a few posts like that on our local group recently and they usually get lots of offers to help out.

changedforonenightonly · 24/02/2023 19:15

Take it op. It will take time to get how you want but it's secure.

changedforonenightonly · 24/02/2023 19:17

Mine was like this when I took it. You should get your deposit back from where you live now then everything you are saving on rent you can throw at buying replacement furniture.

EBay, market place, neighbourhood app etc update daily and our neighbourhood ap is great for this type of stuff

Kpo58 · 24/02/2023 19:17

Definitely check your local Facebook freebies groups. The one near me has sofas, beds, white goods, etc all the time being given away.

Roundandnour · 24/02/2023 19:20

Carpets buy off cuts
The stuff you have that is too big, sell on market place. Use funds to pay for their replacements.
Ask housing about the furniture scheme.
Ask if the painting grant is cash or vouchers
Beds can be bought really cheaply new
If you’re on UC ask for a loan.
Google charities in your area
Ask family/friends if they have unused furniture.

Sofa if desperate could go somewhere like dfs

Sign up with Freecycle and Freegle. You can then join their local groups . Can be really useful when setting up a new home. Good luck!

The British Heart Foundation has 2nd hand furniture on sale in specific furniture only shops. Round my way, people put out requests on 'Nextdoor' and list exactly what they want. They usually get it too.

The BHF shop near us is absurdly expensive - furniture is almost the price of buying new even when condition isn't the best.

threeplusmum · 24/02/2023 20:13

Freecycle

Notjustabrunette · 24/02/2023 20:22

Some carpet shops offer interest free credit, might be worth looking into.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 24/02/2023 20:29

Get a slow cooker- I've seen them brand new for a tenner so you could probably get a large one 2nd hand for a fiver.

I don't actually have an oven as I'm in council housing and it wasn't provided, and I already had a load of kitchen appliances.

Check 2nd hand electrical shops can get some good bargains.

All the best for your new home- it will be hard at first but slowly you will make it your own x

Struckbylightning · 24/02/2023 20:29

I live in Somerset and there is a ‘Somerset Hardship Fund’, people in need can apply for small grants for furniture. There is also something called ‘Village Agents’ who help apply for grants and can help you look for cheap or free stuff.

We also have the Furnitrust who sell furniture for a price the buyer can afford. Also a church charity called Besom who give away household goods. I realise you may not live in Somerset but my point is that there are often things like this around, you just need to find them. Your local Councillor may be able to advise, or local surgery or maybe school?

Ilovetocrochet · 24/02/2023 20:58

Our local food bank also sells second hand furniture, it’s a charity run by a church.

When my friend was in a similar situation of needing furniture for a new flat after being rehoused following dv, she looked on FB and other local sites in more affluent areas to where her new flat was! She reckoned that some folks had more disposable income to spend on home improvements!

Thank you for all the replies.

@Coconut212 I have emailed some of them but i think as im currently a student most will refuse me unfortunately.

Too the people that mentioned the council referral im going to ask about that when i go to sign the tenancy etc this week - thank you.

Credit isnt an option, my ex ruined my credit score, and i havent had the income to work at repairing it yet, so i wouldnt get anything on credit.

@changedforonenightonly oh i am absolutely taking it, the place isnt in the best condition, its going to need a lot of ime and work to get it to feel like a home, but the security means its worth putting that time in.
