Are dentists daylight robbers. Or am I just out of date

I had an nhs dentist for years, didn’t go during covid (they were emergencies only for months on end) so got struck off and am recently with a private dentist for the first time.

had check ups last year all expensive but fine

on Monday an old filling fell out. I called and got an appointment for today. I thought that was good. But they didn’t tell me that basically they could only do a temporary filling today. I have to wait a month then go back for a full one (no appointments before then).

so I had to pay £45 “emergency appointment” today plus £45 “check up fee” despite the fact that other than a possible quick visual check he didn’t do such thing. I was in there a maximum of 3 minutes. My next appointment is £109 minimum for the filling and the receptionist couldn’t promise that I wouldn’t be charged £45 check up fee again. That would be basically £250 for a filling. I nearly cried at the receptionist but at least made the point to her that they should have been upfront in that there would have to be two appointments. I have no issue in paying a dentist good money to actually fix things but I’ve paid £90 for him to put some paste in a hole in my teeth.

is this daylight robbery or just how it is. Or possibly both.

Shop around private dentists. I have one that accepts DenPlan and for a not unreasonable monthly sum I get excellent care and haven't paid anything on top for years including an extraction, replacement filling, x-rays, checkups and hygenist. The last thing I actually had to pay for was a cap and that wasn't bad!

You should have queried todays check-up fee, that's crazy to have to pay that on top. If it took a long time I could understand it maybe as it was filling an appointment time, but to only be in there about 3 minutes? I would definitley have queried paying that.

I most definitely did query and was told no can do. I’m definitely not going to pay it twice though if I get charged that again.
