Why all the hate for SUV’s/4x4 vehicles?

Why do so many people on mumsnet hate SUV and 4 wheel drive vehicles? I don’t think it’s a correct reflection of the UK publics preference because you see so many of this type of vehicle on the roads and in car parks these days. I couldn’t get myself so worked up about what car a person chooses to buy and drive and really don’t think a hybrid Toyota Rav 4 or Honda CRV is any worse for the environment than a diesel MPV like a Vauxhall Zafira.

crackofdoom definitely. I'll never understand the aesthetic appeal of a tall, bulky SUV compared to the much more sleek estate. But I'm biased!

How anyone can say estates are ugly but huge, tall SUVs are better looking is something I'll never understand. Ours has done much more off roading (quite capably) than the average city SUV.

People say they need the space of an SUV but are clueless to how much better an estate would be if they didn't fall for marketing.

I love my brand new RR Sport Hybrid. I live in the countryside and yes i do go offroad. Litterally couldn't give a fuck if other people hate it.

Was out in my beloved SUV yesterday, it’s German, expensive, bit showy, 4wd, gets through the snow. Love it.

On country roads, as I often am, when car was struck by falling tree branch.

Horrible damage to car. DH, myself & 2 Labradors totally fine. The crumple zones did their job well.

As my friend with her small VW said, if I had been in her car, I may have been toast.

Totally get it is my preference, and I can justify it to my conscience.

So I've been the supermarket early this morning 6 out of 8 cars were SUVs wtf is going on. They are definitely becoming more widespread.

That coffin like box is very handy for long journeys, a weeks worth of shopping, ferrying my child around, the odd bit of furniture, taking pets to vet appointments etc. I'll stick with it. I can just sit in my garden to feel the wind in my hair and the rain on my face.

I don't have an SUV but I don't care what other people think of my old, fairly boring, average sized car. In fact I'd be surprised if anyone even had a thought about it tbh! My friend said it was very clean when I gave them a lift the other day but other than that I doubt anyone would give it a moments thought or pass comment.
I bought it because it suited our budget and what we needed it for....but I don't understand why SUV drivers should care what others think of them Or their vehicle?

I think it's because a lot of the owners of these types of cars (not all) tend to be flash and a bit obnoxious!

I think SUVs have their place - for people who need them for farming / off-roading etc. Even those people who have to tow a caravan need something large and strong. Fine.

The vast majority are brought as status symbols by the self conscious as they hope people will look on with envy - hence the 'people are just jealous' comments lol because that's the rhetoric they tell themselves. Often the same type of person who injects chemicals into their lips and wouldn't be seen dead without a designer handbag for the same reasons. It's this type of person that I snigger at as they drive past, not look at with envy - soz.

I don't think SUV drivers do. It seems these posts are full of non SUV drivers with some weird obsession with them, lump them all in a single category of type of people and the need to constantly denigrate them. It's quite bizarre

But literally why should SUV drivers be all angst ridden about what non SUV drivers think? If you go about your life on a constant state of fretting what other people think about your choices, I suggest you seek help. It's not normal.

They are awful things. Excusable if you have a huge family or need to tow a horse etc. But they are awful. Also bloody dangerous. More dangerous than other types of vehicles.

You know why most people buy SUVs? Because they like them and can afford them. Alternatively they could buy a Bentley, BMW, Maserati, Mercedes et al sedan. Would that make you feel better? Really? You would be happier if SUV owners spent their money on a different kind of expensive car? Why? Why do you feel so important that you should be the arbiter of what car people buy?
Done people have more money than others. It affords them more choice. Are you going to have a problem with people flying first class or buying designer clothes or organic food from specialty shops?
If you want to live in a communist state then go find one. There use just accept that people have more money than you and will therefore buy things you might not buy.

I would yes. As a driver who walks most places when I can, I would. I feel far safer as a pedestrian on terraced streets when I can see when crossing roads. With tall SUVs you have to be in the middle of the road just to see past them.

I'm laughing at this because my 80-something male neighbour has got a large SUV. I've never seen him with a designer handbag, and pretty sure he's not got lip filler! He has it because he finds it easier to get in and out of a higher seat.

We have a lotus Elise 21 plate you can look up how much those cost. It was bought with cash , I still think SUVs are wanky. It's nothing to do with jealousy 🤣🤣 many classic and sports car are more expensive than SUVs. SUVs impact other road users because of the high profile of the cars , sports cars do not do this.

@Feefee00 why would I look up the price of your car? Not sure why you are taking about SUVs being wanky when you are the one proudly boasting about paying cash for your car. 😂
