Why all the hate for SUV’s/4x4 vehicles?

Why do so many people on mumsnet hate SUV and 4 wheel drive vehicles? I don’t think it’s a correct reflection of the UK publics preference because you see so many of this type of vehicle on the roads and in car parks these days. I couldn’t get myself so worked up about what car a person chooses to buy and drive and really don’t think a hybrid Toyota Rav 4 or Honda CRV is any worse for the environment than a diesel MPV like a Vauxhall Zafira.

How are the kids meant to cross the roads safely when you are trying to fill up the roads with giant cars parked or otherwise that they cannot possibly see over?

I love my Tesla model Y. It just makes life so much easier and is faster than a Ferrari 360 Modena. Keeps the roads of Kew pollution free too

So you tar all SUV drivers with the same bigoted brush?

@JackieDaws when did you last try to cross a road, as a pedestrian, on a terraced street full of SUVs?

Even as an adult you have to be in the middle of the road just to see if there's cars coming. What chance do children have?

So after reading the entire thread I’m still really non the wiser and some of comments seem really unfair and some replies do have a hint of jealousy to them. And to the person that called a Nissan Juke an SUV 😂 it’s a hatch back and on the same wheel base as a Micra.

I think posters have been pretty damn clear OP.
To summarise:

They're terrible for the environment.

They kill more people than conventional cars.

They take up more space than conventional cars, causing congestion and parking angst.

What is it about this that you don't grasp?

We do. We're comfortable, able to save a good amount each month and never take out finance. We never buy new though (the first few years of depreciation isn't palatable for us) - my current car was 6 years old when I bought it.

Well, my current vehicle is ULEZ compliant, so not the worst emissions wise. It also has a similar NCAP Pedestrian score as a Ford Fiesta - not all SUVs are the same.

I have to agree, this is true of most SUVs. After many many hours of research and comparisons, the only SUV/4x4s that have noticeably more boot capacity than a decent estate are the Volvo XV90 and the LandRover Discovery.

I wouldn't get one purely because I'm crap at parking the little car I have now. Couldn't imagine how I'd cope with an SUV🤣

Plus I've watched too many Line of Duty episodes and whenever I see a big black Range Rover I expect a shoot out to start happening with police 🤦🏽‍♀️

On my double parked road, usually two cars and get past each other easily at 30mph. Even a single decker bus and a car can too.

Today I had to pull over to let an suv past. Maybe cos they just got crap spatial awareness that they were leaving more of a gap from the parked cars on their side. Another one backed into me in a car park, apparently didn't see me, no damage to my car but they did on theirs and claimed on insurance now my premium went up.

Suv in parking lot bloody 10 point turn to reverse out I mean christ alive it was so painful to watch. If you cant drive your big arse vehicle properly dont have one.

For a very odd set of reasons I was in a Maserati showroom recently. The bloke (hot Italian, so I listened) showed me their SUV. An uglier, more vulgar and stupid piece of engineering I have never seen. He kept going on about the quilted leather. Fucking vile.

It's not jealousy. The set of cars I'd rather drive is very very long. Im jealous of Aston Martin drivers.

Lol. Me and DD always comment about an OCG whenever we see a black range rover with tinted out windows.
I'm considering a small SUV as my next car but it's virtually the same dimensions (width/length) as my current car - a medium hatchback - so I feel it should be as easy to park and take up no more space!

Jealous why would you be jealous of one when they're annoying? It's not like they're more expensive or a status symbol or anything (if anything indicate that you're a bit of a try hard or a bad driver and you want a big car because you're high up).
There's another thread going with a woman who can't fit hers in her driveway so parking on the road, but annoyed with her neighbour parking in front of her house. Don't get a cat that you can't park or drive, and don't get a car that is bigger than you need and takes up so much space! I actually hate them as where I love about 90 of the vehicles are SUVs and I doubt most of these people need such a big car. It's all try hard mums in the naice area where I live.

They aren't expensive ffs every car manufacturer makes them. Why do people assume it's jealousy. I was perfectly happy with my small car but I'm going to have to get a bigger one because everyone fecking has one and it impacts on my driving.

We have a lotus Elise so definitely not a jealousy thing over people driving a Hyundai Tucson 🤣🤣.

I think this thread is proving it's got nothing to do with being jealous of those owning SUVs. And maybe SUV drivers get their cars because they want others to be jealous?
Exactly. Imagine going through life convinced everyone is jealous of you and then any criticism of an object you bought only confirms your belief that everyone is jealous of you!

My neighbours, narrow terraced London street with almost no parking, have a matching pair of enormous white Range Rovers which take up so much space it's unfair when we're all struggling to park. It's all about the show for them; they never go outside the M25.

Can’t believe the op is sticking with the ‘you’re all jealous’ trope despite multiple posters listing detailed reasons why they would never ever choose to buy a SUV.

Must be strange to drive around in your huge box on wheels thinking everyone is jealous of you!
