Let them eat turnip - recipes for unpopular veg

The last time I ate turnip was probably well over 30 years ago, and I have a recollection of soggy, boiled cubes with a nondescript taste. Does anyone have any tried and tested recipe ideas for turnip (and other unpopular seasonal veg) to share?

Nigel Slater's seasonal recipes Winter
The only problem is the Ms Coffey did not tell the farmers that they needed to grow turnips. When did you last see turnips in a supermarket?

Marcipex · 24/02/2023 10:15

Turnips aren’t even in season.

Swede is a winter crop.

Turnips are early summer

Swede and carrot mashed together is lovely.

I don't know about turnip, but I grate pretty much any veg & add to my bolognese/cottage pie mix. Last one had mushrooms, carrots, Swede, lentils & a little bit of green pepper & the DSes couldn't tell at all.

I also mash Swede with potato, I don't know if you could do that with turnip?

My DD loves swede chips.

Peel swede and cut into chips. Toss in a couple of tablespoons of oil then 4 or 5 tablespoons of grated parmesan and a decent amount of black pepper. Roast at 180 for 25/30 minutes.

Turnips are in season now, there are different types of turnip. But they are all horrible.
And expensive, they were the most expensive seasonal veg in the supermarket this morning.
Carrots and parsnips on the other hand are delicious in soup, roasted and carrots are brilliant grated, in coleslaw, on their own, as sticks with hummus and a hundred other things

Swede mashed with butter, cream and mint. Serve with a side of haggis. Proper pauper fare. And fucking delicious.

In a curry, of course! When in season, anyhow.

I put this recipe up on the other thread

I'm going to have a go making it this weekend. I love turnip though, I often roast it, goes lovely and sweet, I also like it raw.

I made for the dc potato and turnip potato cakes. To my surprise they loved them, despite two of them being fussy eaters!

Boil potato and turnip together until soft. Fry chopped onions and bacon. Mash the potato and turnip and mix in the onions and bacon. Form into small "cakes and fry them until brown.

You can also put other meat/veg into them. I put tinned sweetcorn, shredded carrot, and chopped mushrooms too.
